Metro Apps Not displaying properly in Windows 8.1

I've been having this problem with 8, 8.1 and the 8.1 update. Sometimes when I open metro/modern apps, the links and content within them do not display entirely. For example, in calculator, the screen is blank and buttons are not visible until the cursor moves over them. This happens in all other apps as well.

Usually this only happens the first time launching them since the last startup.

I have an HP dv7t Quad edition 6c000 (customized) laptop with AMD 7690M-XT graphics + Intel Core i7 2670QM. 1920x1080 resolution, 8GB RAM

I think it's an issue with the video driver. The laptop originally came with Windows 7 and I upgraded to Windows 8, then to 8.1. It took quite some time for HP to come out with a Windows 8 driver for this series, and the most recent update is from 2012. Even that driver had some issues. I've started using the AMD Catalyst drivers now that they support Switchable Graphics to some degree, and am currently on 14.3 Beta. I realize this is a beta version but I've had this issue with almost every driver so I doubt it's because of bring new. The switchable graphics works fine but the metro apps are just glitchy.

I tried restoring 3D application/gaming settings in Catalyst to their default, but to no avail. Any settings I can tweak without having to revert to a 2-year old driver?

Thanks

Well I have a sony vaio SVE14A27CXH laptop with a dedicated graphics card. Been having this problem ever since I upgraded my preloaded window 8 to 8.1 because Sony kept urging me through vaio care. Anyways download AppsDiagnostic.diagcab from microsoft.com, link below.

http://download.microsoft.com/download/F/2/2/F22D5FDB-59CD-4275-8C95-1BE17BF70B21/AppsDiagnostic.diagcab

...And that did for me. Also prior to the diagnostic, I did go to both my vid cards and factory defaulted my preferences through catalyst Control Center and intel graphics and media, but I don't think that did anything.

Also update all windows 8.1 updates and allow drivers to be updated.

Now go ahead and e-djing like a pro

Same problem here. Brand new HP desktop and the store, mail and ebay amongst others do not display properly. Hovering over selections with mouse cursor only messes with display further and the screen eventually becomes completely unusably.

Did you try what I did to fix it?

I did try your suggestion but it did not work for me. However, I have managed to fix it. It was a drive issue, I reinstalled the driver and it now works fine. As it was a brand new PC I did not suspect it to be a driver issue.

My Appstore and PC settings are working, I have the same problem that OP mentioned: "Sometimes when I open metro/modern apps, the links and content within them do not display entirely. For example, in calculator, the screen is blank and buttons are not visible until the cursor moves over them. This happens in all other apps as well. "

I had the same problem and i found the solution quite accidentally.
I realized when I use the apps on my laptop using battery they display properly but when I use them while my laptop is plugged in all I see is blank black display.
So I went to power options -> Change plan settings -> Change advanced power settings -> Switchable Dynamic Graphics -> Global Settings
and changed Plugged in setting from maximize performance to optimize performance.
That's it. Problem Solved. Just wanted to help.
