I want to know how much performance boost will I get if I upgrade the processor
I play games at 1440 x 900
is it enough to upgrade only the processor or should I have to upgrade my GPU
can any one suggest the processor I should upgrade to and
may be gpu if necessary

Exactly WHICH Core2 Duos are you talking about?
We'll also need to know the exact make and model of motherboard, not all motherboards support the full range of LGA775 CPUs'.

Grab a freebie of HWinfo, it'll give you full details of the motherboard.
It may be possible to source a Quad for the existing motherboard but, given your 1440x900 res and HD7770 card, I'd leave the system alone and start saving for a more modern build, great as they were the older C2Ds are struggling with current titles and even adding a Quad into the mix isn't going to help very much-and Intel boards are usually not helpful for overclocking.

From what I can see the current system should be capable enough at 1440x900 res but as a tip, don't use any Anti aliasing, my 7770 suffered heavy performance loss with even 2x AA enabled.
I suggest you start new threads, here and in the Components/Homebuilt Forums.
Give plenty of info: Budget, monitor res (any plans to upgrade to 1080?), power supply, case, HDD, and, most importantly, your expectations and requirements, what games are you plying? What games WILL you play?
Toms has just recently finished its System Builder articles, check them out and see if any of their ideas/systems appeal.
If you're new to PC hardware or just a little 'out of the loop' expect a steep learning curve.

Yes it will bottleneck to some extent but it is highly dependent on the game.

it also depends on the games settings. people dont usually realize that by turning up the graphical settings in a game you only work the gpu harder, not the cpu (in a gpu optimized game.) this will help negate a bottleneck
