I have had this problem for over a year, but it comes and goes.

It started with my PC occasionally freezing up hard. This would sometimes happen several times a day. Eventually, it would give me some scary beeps on boot, which I learned meant "video card error".

I popped open the case, and while there was a bit of dust inside, it didn't look too serious. I cleaned it as best I could, and it started up, but the problem would crop up again for a while.

It has become kind of a cycle where I have no problem for months, and then I get a few weeks of bad behavior. At this point when it happens, I just pop open the case, jiggle the video card a bit, wiggle the cables, and start it up again. This technique seems to be running out of power as well.

I am considering upgrading to another card, but if the motherboard or power supply are the problem that would be a waste.

If you could tell me the likely culprit is, and if the likely culprit is my video card, what a good upgrade (or even sidegrade) would be. Ideally I would like something quiet and stable with roughly the same amount of power.

I don't know my motherboard type, but I'm running Windows 7 32 with a 450w power supply (that I have heard is a bit anemic), an i7-870 and the video card is a GTS 250 512.

I've updated to the latest driver set with no change in the problem.
