Hi,

I've just read couple of threads dealing with performance of HD 4850. So far I see no one has it below mine. Any idea?

Rig:
Athlon x2 5600+ Brisbane
6Gb ddr2 800
XFX HD4850
PSU Chieftec GPS 550W
Windows 8.1 64

Results I got on various drivers:
3D Mark Vantage 5458 (Graphics 6643, CPU 3555)
3D Mark 06 7756 (SM20 3195, SM3.0 3749, CPU 1935)

I saw better results on X2 4000+

Drivers ?
I tried moded 13.4, 11.11 and some legacy 13.9.

I don't think you're ever going to get very good performance on that card, it's far from new. At that point, I don't think performance is going to matter much, it will run Microsoft Office, but don't expect to game or do anything on it.

Thanks for the input. Please only define what does old mean in this case. Old because drivers, win8 pr that copper got rusty and capacitors not efficient?

I can run and play metro 2033 demo on defaults at probably 20fps or something.

Maybe 3d marks fails with my cpu as by default 3d mark runs at 1280x1024 resolution as I remember.

Ciao

Ok. I am old too and I am not expecting any miracles nor playing modern games. My concern is why my scores are 30% lower than others with the same sort of comfiguration.

Ciao,

Try running a temperature monitor. I would download MSI Afterburner, which is normally used for overclocking, and use the built in benchmark as a stress test while keeping an eye on the temperature monitor. I expect there is a bit of thermal throttling. What is the inside of your machine like? Do you dust it often?

lol it wasn't that bad. it is hard to compare with current generation of card but i think performance wise 4850 maybe sits between GTX650 and kepler based GT640. but i think the very problem with this card were drivers as AMD stop supporting them long ago. and officially AMD did not include win 8.1 support for their HD4000 series while nvidia extend their support for win 8.1 down to 8000 series.

I'm not saying it was bad, but it is an older card. If he's getting 30% lower performance though, there probably is an issue, and it is likely the OS if not thermal throttling. I expect that's what it is, because older cards tend to be dusty, which creates heat, and of course, throttling.

Thanks for all. Indeed this could be the heat but it isn't. Temps are correct an my unit is dust free.

Would be apropriate to check it on some other set, different resolution and maybe with some overclock the cpu.

Hi again,

I run some alternative tests and results are not so much different in comparison to mine.
Furmark preset 720: 1046 points
Furmark preset 1080: 566 points

Ungine Heaven 4 on dx9
1280x1024: 634
1920x1200: 388

I run metro 2033 demo on normal quality, AAA, AF16, 1920x1200 and fraps shows 20-50fps.

Maybe I should not worry to much about 3dmarks, or maybe it is windows 8.1 or other software issue.

Thanks,
Whatlogin

Yup,

Nothing more to say. I did couple more tests and comparisons and looks like the card is all right. Only scores for 3dmarks fails to be comparable to similar setups.

Thanks for comments!
