Hello,

I have an Asus RT-N66U "Dark Knight" router, and I'm using a tool called Wifi Analyzer to determine what wifi channel to use based on how many other wifi networks are on each "channel"... however I'm a bit confused by the term "channel"

When I do a google search for how to change the channel on my n66u, Google only yields results pertaining to the 20/40mhz channels, but in this wifi analyzer tool, and the "change your wifi channel" tutorials I have come across.. there are channels 1-12 & 14...

I want to know what the difference is between the 20/40mhz channels, and the "wifi channels" listed in the wifi analyzer application - and more importantly to find out how to switch off of the heavily used 4-8 "channel"...

Any real advice is much appreciated!

A channel on the 2.4 band is only 5mhz wide so even a 20mhz channel will take 4 channels. This is why they say to only use 1,6,11 When you use 40mhz channels you need to use 8 5mhz channels in a row. This makes it impossible to not use the middle part of the range. This is also key to why 802.11ac will not run on 2.4. 802.11ac needs 80mhz and there is only 60mhz total on the 2.4g range.

@reedo_43 - You didn't really answer the question, but I appreciate the effort.
@bill001g - Thank you for the additional information regarding the two 'bands.' It was insightful, and helpful in determining which channels to switch to. However, it wasn't quite what I was looking for.

Complete answer: The setting I was looking for - in order to change the "frequency" channel on the 2.4ghz band is called "Control Channel", while changing the frequency between the 2.4 and 5mhz band is simply referred to as 'frequency' in the list of options.
