Can somebody explain VPN service...?. Why does it require a Internet connection? Why do corporate offices and branches uses a VPN connection

Solution
It means virtual private network. It does not require internet and offices can choose to use vpn or just use a real private network. It is purely a method of running multiple networks over the same physical network.

If the lines carrying network access are down, then VPN access is not possible. Whether you can access the Internet via your company's VPN connection depends on how your network is configured and what connectivity it is configured to support.

The word "virtual" used to mean it did not run on "real" circuits and fiber and such. Now it means very little. Even if you were to buy a private network it would likey run over MPLS which itself is a form of VPN. You can still get real physical circuits but it does not tend to be cost effective so everything is some fake ie virtual thing. You can run vpn over vpn over vpn.

It is mostly who is doing the setting up. If you set it up then you can see the real and the virtual networks. If someone else did the setup the network would appear real to you since it is the only one you can see but there is no way to tell.

You have to be very careful here. VPN does not just run over the internet. You very well could have connectivity between the office over a private network. As long as you have some form of connectivity you "may" be able to get to the offices it depends how you design it.

Lets say you have a office1 with only internet no private network.
Lets also so you have a office2 with private network and internet.
then you have your main office.

If you had a vpn over the internet to get to the office1 and your main office lost its direct internet connection you would in theory be down. But if you defined a backup internet connection via office 2. When your main internet goes down in the main office it would use a VPN over the private network to get to office 2. Now what would happen also is your connection to office one would go VPN over the "virtual" internet connection via office2. So you run VPN in VPN.

You need to just treat VPN as another type of network and not assume it is related to the internet in anyway. It is just the vast majority of people who do not work in the industry do not see any other form of network coming into their building other than internet.

This is almost a impossible question to answer remember VPN means "VIRTUAL" so it is some form of virtual cable. It would obviously have to be a ethernet cable or something eventually to connect out to the real world but it get exceptionally complex.

This is like asking what kind of processor a virtual server runs.
