The amd athlon 760k and Nvidia 750 ti combo seems to do great. Assuming you already have an os stored on a thumbdrive you can make a decent build around these two. Then later on when you have enough time and obviously money you can upgrade to am3+ setup.

Here is one with windows:
http://pcpartpicker.com/p/3HaoO
It should be able to play most games at high settings 1080p, however I recommend putting $30 more towards the mobo and $40 towards the graphic card to turn it to a r9 270, but even with this it should easily match (probably surpass) any gaming console out there and this is with windows which you'll need to play most high profile games like bf4 or dayz because they won't run off linux. Also $20 more to the case would be helpful as well.

+1... The R9 270 is a great GPU.

This is decent enough to play new games from normal to high at 1080p , but will most definetly play at high in 720p
