Hosting externally is not an option (just wanted to get that out of the way).

Basically, I want to build a "data center" environment in my garage for my mid-tower server which runs dual CPUs (Xeon E5620s) and 6 HDDs usually at low-mid loads. It is currently a testing machine I use inside my home, but I am starting a new venture with it and it will be my "production" server for awhile. I am moving it to the garage so that I can hook up the rather large UPS to the generator, put other redundancies in place, and eliminate having the fan noise inside my home.

I am very near the equator where heat, seasonal humidity, dust, and power consumption are concerns. I was thinking building a mini-room or closet and using a standard small A/C unit or buying a rather expensive fully-enclosed server cabinet which has its own A/C unit built-in (probably a vortex cooler, anyway).

Coincidentally, I already have a case which would work very well with a vortex cabinet cooler.

My case:

Example vortex cooler:

I would duct the cooler so that it expels cold air into the cavity between the case front (where the fans pull in the air) and the case door, and then simply tape up the external vent spaces so no outside air could enter. That would effectively give me a completely sealed environment except for the exhaust.

I am also thinking I could later buy another server for fail-over and do the same. I could also then cross-duct for cooling redundancy.

So, before I do all this, I would welcome feedback from anyone who has experience with using vortex coolers in this way. What are the "gotchas"?

Nevermind. A vendor informed me this type of cooling requires a 5-7.5 HP compressed air source. I happen to already have that in the garage, but I don't know that I would want to run it 24 x 7 x 365. More research and comparisons are in my future.
