Solution
The 770 is great, but also take a look at the 7970/280x. VRAM does not mean much at all unless you're running at high resolutions (4k), and even then 3gb should be sufficient. If you wait until the 800 series, why not wait until the 900? Get what's good now, it won't suddenly become slower because a new series is out, and it might still be a better deal. For example, let's say the 860 is equal to the 770, but will cost $50 more because it's brand new, the 770 is still the better option.

Solution
if you really need it now i suggest you take it. the problem with 800 series we still don't know for sure when it will actually come. so far we only have wild rumor. one rumor point to maxwell possibly delay into 2015 frametime due to problem with TSMC 20nm and the latest rumor suggesting june/july this year release but will use TSMC 28nm instead of 20nm node.

Exactly, nobody knows what the 800 series will be like. It may not be much of an upgrade at all, or maybe it will double the speed of the current generation, but that will reflect in the price, and it will not make the 770 slower.
