What could be causing my Tosiba Satellite laptop screen to randomly go black?

My laptop will start up some days, but there will be no image. If I look at the computer under direct light, I can see a faint image of a normal screen (Too faint to be functional. Can't even see the pointer/cursor). Sometimes I unplug the pc, take out the battery and hold down the power key for about 30 seconds and the image will be visible again when I power it back up. Sometimes this doesn't work. Sometimes the screen will be visible for a few days in a row for long periods of time and then on the fourth day or so, no image and it will take multiple times of unplugging and removing the battery to get the screen visible again. I use balanced power on my pc. My battery is extremely low (could not last on its own for more than an hour probably) and I am not using the original power plug that came with the pc (but have been using the same plug for a number of months). This problem began about two weeks ago). I have downloaded a new program within that two week period (Newton Express (a program to upload gps data from a running watch). I didn't used to shut my computer down every night, but began doing this when I started having the screen problem, hoping that would fix the issue. I have not noticed any change in the problem (better or worse) with shutting it down.

Any idea what could be causing this?

Sounds like your backlight died. Shine a flashlight on it and you may be able to see the picture a bit more. If that happens, it is most likely the backlight. If that is the issue, a new screen will cost you about $70, and is very easy to replace. There are a ton of videos for replacing the Toshiba Satellite screen, and the model does not matter for the videos, although it does matter for the actual screen you buy.
