So I am in a rut because I do not have the funds to go out and get two quality items. Im afraid if I get one quality item and its not the fix Ill be stuck. SO... I assembled my system last week and ever since fire up, when I play games with higher intensity graphics, my graphics card dies for a brief second. The fan cuts out, and then it comes back on. Half the time the driver fails and recovers, other times I am able to alt tab back into my game. BTW: I have a HD4870 video card and a antec 600 watt tri power power supply. It should be more than sufficient power but it is a older psu.

For the life of me based on the research I have done I cannot figure it out. PSU or GPU? From what I have read, most people who have PSU problems experience shutdowns. I have not experienced that at all. My graphics card has low temps, I have checked. It can play StarCraft 2 on low settings just fine. But when I put them at medium or high, which this comp has handled before, the delays start happening, once in a while I get the checkerboard, and most of the time the card just cuts out and comes back. I cannot determine whether or not this is PSU or GPU and would really like to be able to solve it without having to go buy two new items. Mainly there are no brick and mortar stores around me with pc components so id have to newegg it.

Any help would be appreciated!

well, first thing to do is to monitor all temps(cpu-gpu at idle and load through gpuz and core-real temp) and check while under heavy load if psu is overheating or making any wierd noises!if all temps are good then, most probably is a psu issue! you can also check voltages through bios, if possible!

Have you considered that it may not be hardware at all? If under heavy use, the card just suddenly dies, it is possible the driver is crashing. Before I spent any money at all, I would do a clean install of the drivers.
If that doesn't work, honestly it would be mostly speculation on our part to guess what is wrong.
