hello, I am building a new pc and am torn between windows 7 and 8, I plan on playing a lot of dayz, battlefield 4, borderlands 2, and minecraft (possibly a bit of tf2) which system should I get and when does support end for windows 7?

Solution
Like zoog said, you can only use DirectX 11.2 with Win8. That's probably going to become more important in the future. For gaming longevity, you should go with Win8.1.

Not true. Windows 8 is actually faster and more efficient than Win7. You can install Classic Shell for free, which bypasses Metro, goes straight to Desktop Mode, and gives you a Start Button. Going this way gives you the familiarity of Win7 + the nice enhancements of Windows 8. I always tell people that Windows 8...

My CPU is an i5 4670k, and my gpu is gtx 760, when will support for windows 7 end? And I have heard a lot about windows 8 being bad for arma 2 (which I play) and borderlands 2 and that the performance gain in bf4 is only about 3 frames, is any of this true and when does support end for windows 7?

Im not much of a Windows user (Linux mostly), but I personally prefer windows 7. As do most gamers. It is (in my opinion) easier to use, less bloated and less invasive. I recommend trying both though, if that's possible, it is almost entirely preference.

Windows 7.
Windows 8 is too much of a change from how everything in windows was arranged previously, where even something as simple as finding the shutdown button is massively harder than it was before. (I know where it is now, but it's not obvious, and not where it was located previously at all)

I'd get windows 8.1 I've heard the update has actually made it much more user friendly. Plus when directx 12 comes around, chances are is that it'll be a windows 8 exclusive. Honestly, there're no real negatives with choosing windows 8.1 at this point.

As mentioned a few times:
Win 8 and 8.1 has higher FPS in a few games, especially newer ones which use DX 11.1 or 11.2.
Win 7 is preferred, mostly due to being used to it, but also as it is a little more mouse intuitive.

I have Win 7, but I probably would get Win 8.1 if I built a new system. We'll have to bite the bullet eventually, and learn how to use Win 8.

If I choose to purchase windows 8.1 and install from scratch, do I need an older version of windows installed to install it, or can I just install it fresh, and does the same apply to windows 7?

I always tell people that Windows 8 isn't worth paying for if you have Windows 7, but if you're doing a new install, definitely go with Windows 8 + Classic Shell if you don't like ModernUI (Metro).

That all depends on whether you buy the full version or the upgrade. A long time ago, Windows upgrades used to let you enter a previous valid Windows license during the upgrade process so you didn't have to have it already installed. They don't allow that anymore. If you buy an upgrade, you have to have a previous version of Windows installed.

So, Im getting the feeling I should get 8.1, I play a lot of Borderlands 2, and it runs slower under Windows 8, is their anyway to fix this? And in general, do most games run better under windows 8.1 over windows 7?
