Extremely loud computer...

Hi,
My computer lately has been really loud, even when I use the silent setting in BIOS. I know that it isn't my fans because I stopped all my fans (including gpu and CPU fans) with my fingers while my computer was running a benchmark and that didn't change the noise level. I doubt it could be my hard drives (although I do have two 3.5" and one 2.5" HDD's) and so far my main conclusion has been my PSU. I can link it to you, but it's just an average 500W £40 non modular power supple from a manufacturer I can't remember immediately - but not a shifty one ;) I completely rewired my computer a couple months ago because the first time I built it I just sorta wanted to get it done and powered on, so it was all over the place. My main worry with getting a new PSU is that I'll mess something up but it worked out fine the last time I re-did it.

Basically, although I digressed a lot there, i am just wondering what you guys think about this, and how I could make it quieter.

Thanks!!

P.S. Usually I wouldn't care about the noise of my computer as I have noise cancelling headphones but recently I got a new mic for commentaries and it's really sensitive.

USAFret is correct, you really should track down the source of the noise. It won't actually be hard. Start in one corner of the pc, and with it on and running, start applying pressure to everything. Touch the psu, the gpu, the fans, the CPU cooler fan (watch your fingers), even touch the slot covers for the extra slots on back by the monitor cable. Your noise could very well be the psu, in which case a new one would be advisable, or it could be something as small as a loose screw vibrating or one of the slot covers from when you cleaned the gpu. Either way, for peace of mind finding the source should be done and if it is the psu, at least your decision to buy a new semi or fully modular one will be justified.

Not to begrudge your efforts, but I found in all my years of messing around in PC's, that inevitably there would be 1 place that always seems to get missed on even the most thorough cleaning and that is the psu fan. If that has accumulated several seasons worth of dust, it will knock it off balance, possibly putting premature wear on the bearings and most definitely will make it loud.

Thanks everyone for ye suggestions so far, no need to feel sorry Karadjgne, the PSU has only been in my computer since January 2013 and I just don't really know how to thoroughly clean a PSU. I would be happy to buy a new PSU as long as you guys are sure that's what the problem is being caused by.

A 'real' cleaning involves q-tips, a vacuum, small soft bristle paint brush. Sounds kinda odd but it works the best. Some ppl use compressed air, but I find that gets kinda messy.
Use the q-tips on the fan blade parts that are hard to get to, and the paint brush for everything else. Keep the vac at a small distance, it picks up all thedust made airborn by the brush. Pay special attention to the heatsinks and/or radiators as these get the most accumulated dust, blown there by the fan. What you want in the end is for the inside of the OC to look like it was just built. I usually remove the gpu to clean, but leave the cou heatsink alone. It's a pain to reseat.
This should be done at least every 3-4 month's minimum, and if it takes less than 1 hour, you didn't do it right. Basically, the more meticulous you are with cleaning a pc, the better your temps will stay, the longer the pc will last.

Do you think I should buy a new PSU, maybe modular? Then I could start a-new, clean it ever 3 months, and be able to take off those silly cables I don't need.

Stop, please. You're just not helpful

And if you replace the PSU, and it is still noisy.....you have not found the source of the noise.

Then where else could it be coming from? Not the fans, I highly doubt the hard drives, and not the gpu.

Okay, thank you both, and I will do that when I get back home. I am thinking about getting a semi modular power supply in future but I will try to clean out this one first if it is the source of le problemo.
Thank you all again!
