I currently have a AMD Phenom II X4 965

while it is doing great I am curious if I should be looking at upgrading it or will I be fine for another year? If I should upgrade what would be a good candidate?

That is a very good CPU, but with today's Video Cards, probably not enough and would bottleneck them to some degree. I would look at an i5 4670 or i5 4670k ( if you plan to Overclock ). If AMD, I would look at something near the top of the FX line.

Good plan, can be putting money away for the new goodies coming on the horizon, I'm the same way, been really trying to talk myself into a X79, but am holding off to see how the new Haswell refresh (Devils Canyon) CPUs look and perform with the upcoming Z97 mobos

I know its not necessary but I wanted to add an update about 2 weeks after posting this my HIS AMD Radeon HD7850 2gb graphics card literally caught fire. Everything else in my pc was fine since I saw it happen but I now installed a Sapphire AMD Radeon R9 270 graphics card and it has breathed new life into my rig. Now I am having the fun of dealing with HIS support since the card was only a year old and it is under warranty for 2 years. I'm not sure if they are giving me my money back or a new card if it is a new card I guess I will be selling it ha ha.
