When I buy a game for Steam I notice the first time I play the game, it installs API's, directX 11, etc. What are API's purpose when it comes to gaming? Thanks. Matt

Those are essentially how the game interacts with your graphics card. What it is installing there is the set of commands able to be sent to the GPU.

Direct x is a set of protocols and dialogues between the game and your GPU. The API is determining how what where and why your GPU is rendering.
