os wipe and back up?

okay so I need to put this new OS on an old junk computer and backup the files. This is a job I have to do. What is the best way to go about taking an old hard drive, backing it up, formatting it with a new OS, then putting the files back. I was thinking about useing parted magic.

I am going to have to back up the files and do a clean install as these computers are wrecked and or are running Linux. This means I have to format the hard drives.

what about gparted? I am thinking about just dumping the hard drive onto an external one then formatting and installing windows. Then I can put all the files and folders into the my documents? This hard drive is currently formatted for linux. Will windows let me do that? or will all the files I dumped onto the external hard drive no be visible?
