How do I change free space into unallocated space?

I bought my Toshiba Satellite Laptop with Windows Vista OS with an upgrade to Windows 7 (Disk 0 is a basic volume)I setup a dual boot by partitioning my hdd like this: 4 partitions plus the Toshiba recovery partition. C: contains Windows 7 plus my programs (a primary boot partition) D: I installed Windows XP on it (a logical drive in the extended partition) E: has all my data on it , docs, pics, downloaded programs etc (a logical drive in the extended partition) F: has Windows Vista on it. (a primary boot partition)

My E: drive is almost full so I deleted the D: logical partition so I could extend the E: partition into that space. Here's my problem: the space that D took up is now "free space" and if I right click on any of the partitions "Extend" is greyed out and unable to be clicked on. I then turned off System Restore on all partitions but "Extend" is still greyed out. So I assume I need to change the "free space" to "unallocated space" but I can't find a way to do this. I used Disk Management in Win 7 to partition the hdd Can someone tell me how to make that change please?

A few things with Windows Disk management. You can only extend in one direction i think and i think that is to add to the end of the parititon not the begining.

You need to download like EASEUS Partition Manager free version and use that to extend the partition. Its easy to do.

Install, Click on the partition you want to add to and click on the Resize button, and then most the bar to add the space. once you click ok click on the check box in the upper left and it will restart the PC and do the job.

Thanks so much Drtweak for your very clear explanation. You found my problem with the partitions.. they are both logical partitions in the extended partition and I was trying to add to the beginning of the partition, not the end. As I read through other threads I saw the Easus Partition Manager mentioned and after posting here I downloaded and installed it for use after I backup the files. Thanks :) This seems like a great forum to get answers to my questions! :D

Thanks Gabrielle03 but the partitions D and E are immediately adjacent, in fact, they are the only 2 logical partitions inside the extended partition. I want to extend the E partition into the space left when I deleted the D partition.

I have never used professional partition software because I used dos to partition my previous hdds with Windows 98se and XP. I knew I could use dos to extend my partition but I was concerned about mixing the disk management tool and dos commands because I do not want to lose everything on that hdd. The other problem with doa is it is just another tool now, it no longer has the ability to manage windows as it did in previous os's. I think the free Easus software will work well. Thanks for your suggestions :)
