Fans on an NH-D14, on a Rampage iv Black Edition, in a Phantom 630, with a GTX 780Ti

So, muggins here didn't do his research properly and found that the NHD14 won't fit on the mobo with the fans squirting air towards the rear exhaust fan on the Phantom 630. The little wire clips that hook the cooler fans onto the fins project a few mils and obstruct the PCI-e 16x slot where my super duper gtx 780Ti is supposed to live. If I rotate the cooler it is pulling air down from the top of the case where it would be fighting the top exhaust fan, and it would be squirting the hot air onto the back of the GTX. Bu66er.
So, the question is, if i leave the fans off the NHd14, load one onto the angled bracket in the case and the other somewhere else, maybe the base and just leave the cooler running on fins alone (right underneath and next to the top and rear exhaust case fans) will that be enough for the CPU? Will I still be able to overclock the CPU safely? I'm a bit of a noob at this and would appreciate the experts' advice.

I could move the card down a slot but the other three are only pci-e 8x. Having dropped a bomb on the mobo and gfx card I want to use the best possible connection for it as its running a 1440p monitor as primary and one other screen, maybe more in the future.
My other option is to try and return the cooler and get something different. I suspect this might be a pain in the wotsit due to having to clean thermal paste etc.

Hmm, yeah, looks like first and third slots are 16x if using 1,2 or 3 cards but only first slot if using 4 cards.
Does this mean i can plug the card into the third slot alone and get 16x? That would solve problems for the forseeable future.

I think i'll try putting it in the third slot.
For the record only clipping one side of the fans onto the fins on the cooler probably wouldn't work. The middle fan would probably stay in ok as it would be hanging down and sandwiched between the two banks of fins, but the outside fan would be flapping about.
Would also have to remove the wire clips from the bottom edge of the fans which is doable but would probably destroy the clips in the process.

As for clipping them on after the gfx is in place that is a definite no. Tried that and the clips and the gfx card would occupy the same physical space.

I'll report back when I have finished the build. Still waiting for the OS to be delivered so I don't know if I ahve wired everything up correctly yet, a special kind of frustrating.
Many thanks for your input!

The software turned up at last so I ran the boot test and installed everything.
GFX is in the third slot, cooler is in "normal" horizontal orientation pulling air from the front, across the cpu and out the rear exhaust fan.
OC clock panel is telling me the CPU is @ 38degrees C, a quick play on Diablo 3 at 2560x1440 with everything on max was smooth and gorgeous.
I don't know if the card is not performing at maximum potential but frankly I can't tell.
If i decide to SLI at some point in the future I'll have to replace the cooler, but I'll probably be thinking about adding LEDs and glowfaster stripes as well anyway.
Thanks for the help!
