Good call getting the i5-4440 instead of the i5-4670. The i5-4440 is more or less on par, but is slightly cheaper. So yeah, if you're not overclocking, get the i5-4440!

BTW - just noticed - that case is HUGE! (was not expecting to go up to XL-ATX motherboards) Be sure to review the case choice.

The NZXT Source 210 Elite and Corsair 200R could be good choices for him, unless he's willing to spend a bit more.
