Just wanting to know, are the RAM requirements on games true?

I was looking through Can You Run It as I usually look there to get games requirements ( not to test as usually it's inaccurate ). I was wondering if games really needed as much ram as they say. A lot of newer games say 8GB recommended and sometimes 6GB minimum and was wondering, do the games really need that much?

Is it a matter of the ram sharing with graphics card or does more ram give more power than I think?

Like something like Battlefield 3 on Ultra according to Task Manager, it usually uses 250-500MB yet recommended requirements are 4GB.

Solution
to play battlefield 3 ultra you need 4GB ram. but it does take around 500MB or more. more memory is recommended to handle the game + windows without slowing down when playing. newer games will take about 1-2GB + windows thats 2-3GB. no games dont need 6gb they recommend it so that you can play the game smoothly at what memory it needs to get the best performance for it. in gaming 8-6GB is recommended so that when you run newer games it would take around 1GB or 2GB. no effect in performance when ram shares memory to the gpu it automaticly as dedicated memory which doesnt increase performance.
