to the point.....

i got new R9 290 from MSI,that is Gaming 4G with Advanced TwinFrozr cooler.
installed on my system,i tried this driver "AMD_Catalyst_14.3_Beta_V1.0_Windows_B22_March12" i download it from Guru3D.
at first no problem, then tried Unigine Valley, got low score as low as 500 then 1380, that is so low and with some lag in benchmarking too.
tried gaming Crysis 3, Far Cry 3, Battlefield 3, Metro Last Light, very stable but the frame not as high as i saw in other review. but it slightly faster than my Sapphire 7970 Vapor-X (already sold).
my 290 topped out 88'C on Metro Last Light with some fluctuating Core Clock. my CPU reach 71'C (FX-8350 not overclocked)
i haven't overclock yet with 14.3 BETA

then i decide not to do gaming for a while, because CPU temp are hot due to R9 290 under it, usually my CPU topped out at 55'C.
so i just do browsing using both chrome and firefox while listening some music using Windows Media Player (some are music video and some are mp3) then it suddenly freeze and got BSOD.
after goes into windows again, i do the same thing and got BSOD.
tried gaming for 2 hour, i got no BSOD at all just lag, sometime the core clock drop to 687Mhz then up again to 977Mhz.

tired of this, looking around the web, got solution to use "13-12_win7_win8_64_dd_ccc_whql" Driver from Guru3D also.
i remove previous driver using Display Driver Uninstaller from Guru3D.
because i believe it stable driver from what i know after looking around, i overclock the card using MSI Afterburner.
i got score 2393 with 105fps and max temp of 84'C with 100% fan speed.
tried gaming Crysis 3, Far Cry 3, is soooo smooooth with all setting maxed out and 2x msaa (vsync disabled) i got minimum 38fps and max 87fps which is awesome, cleared 3 stage and no problem in system.
check Afterburner and GPU-Z, GPU usage is up and down to 70% - 100% and Core Clock is fluctuating so much. but i got good frame rate.

but still,i was surprised when i browsing using both Chrome and Firefox while listening to music using Windows Media Player, at certain point its always BSOD.

any solutions?
i had this card for about 2 weeks, should i RMA it? or its just driver issue?
while i type this thread,i'm using chrome but not listening to music, just chrome on active along with other background app, no BSOD.

here to be clear.....
my spec:
CPU- AMD FX-8350 (stock clock)
Cooling - Cooler Master Hyper 212X
Motherboard - ASUS Crosshair V Formula-Z
RAM - Corsair Vengeance Pro 16Gb Dual Channel 1600Mhz C9
GPU - MSI R9 290 Gaming 4G
System Drive - OCZ Vector 128Gb
HDD1 - Western Digital Black 2Tb
HDD2 - Seagate Barracuda 2Tb
PSU - Corsair HX750 80+ Gold
Case - Cooler Master Storm Stryker (fan installed all over the case on possible mounting)
OS - Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit
Monitor - ASUS VX238H-W
========================================

using 14.3 BETA Driver on my R9 290:
- no overclock
- got BSOD at certain point when browsing+listening music using Windows Media Player
- no BSOD if i just watch video normaly (just watch video only,no browsing...etc no)
- and sometime BSOD even in just idle desktop win7
- performance only slight increase from my previous 7970Ghz (1100Mhz Core & 1600Mhz Memory)
- feels laggy
- at certain point while gaming/benchmark both GPU usage and Core Clock are fluctuating a lot and sometime reach 678Mhz then rise again to 977Mhz. the fluctuation on Core Clock are often between 844Mhz-977Mhz

using 13.2 WHQL Driver on my R9 290:
- at first no overclock (doing games and goes smooth)
- now stable overclock at 1055Mhz Core & 1400Mhz Memory with 50% Power limit (core voltage untouched)
- i enable AMD Overdrive on CCC but after that i kept using MSI Afterburner for tweaking
- first time BSOD is after i restart my PC the 2nd time, just when i open Afterburner, it BSOD. but after that not happening again until (so Afterburner not an issue)
- same problem occur like 14.3 BETA, i still got BSOD when browsing+listening music using Windows Media Player
- Very RARE BSOD when just idle desktop win7, even while listening to music too, but it does BSOD but not so often like 14.3 BETA
- no BSOD if i just watch video normaly, like watching anime or bluray movies, normal
- in gaming i got HUGE improvement using this 13.2 WHQL
- at certain point while gaming/benchmark GPU usage sometime fluctuate a lot but game keep stable only drop a little then rise again. Core Clock is very stable now, 980-1055Mhz but when it fluctuate, Core Clock drop to 400Mhz then jump to 1055Mhz, usually Core Clock drop only to 680Mhz and 765Mhz then rise again to its normal 1055Mhz Core

the Blue Screen code is always:
0xa0000001 (0x0000000000000005, 0x0000000000000000, 0x0000000000000000, 0x0000000000000000)

what is the problem exactly? i'm frustated, so i avoid playing music while browsing but still listening some music when i just want to listen on it using Windows Media Player, until now still no BSOD.
(i'm afraid if i do browsing+music = BSOD and desktop win7+music = BSOD)

solution? T__T

Solution
Hello Draguila,
Any solution to your issue ?
I have exactly the same issue, same BSOD, same code, same GPU (from MSI) I have just bought a week ago to upgrade my HD 5970.
I found as well that 13.12 drivers are the best.
Your feedback would be highly appreciated, hard to find a decent solution on the web except than RMA the card...

UPDATE
i overclock the card to 1100Mhz now and leave memory at stock (1250Mhz).
the temp was high, if i leave on auto, it would easily reach 88'C or 90'C!!!
if i set the fan to 100% it only reach 82'C to 86'C, is that normal?
i only add 50% Power Limit.

i live on Indonesia, Bandung City. its tropical island, i feel hot in this room.....no A/C or fan in this room lol
oh, and idle temp for the GPU is 44-45'C.
CPU idle 43-45'C.

is that really normal?

Those temps are normal for a 290, they get so hot they down clock themselves so they don't burn up. I used to have one as-well, it made a great space heater lol. I sent it back thinking it was a defect, but was told this was normal. Iv been happily at 60C on a 780. The BSOD might be heat related, but Some people say its because of a defected 290.

Also "my CPU reach 71'C" that's not ok, i would suggest getting an aftermarket cooler or if you can afford a water cooled heat sink. Drivers have nothing to do with heat.

but i saw on many forums, talking about the same MSI 290 Gaming 4G, they had temp like 66'C to 78'C and that is with 1100Mhz Core & 1400Mhz Memory.
i guess my ambient temperature are high because it sat 45'C on idle.

PowerTune is way off now, with 50%+ Power Limit, it rarely dips down, but it just too hot even with 100% fan speed.
sounds like impossible that the Advanced TwinFrozr could not keep the Hawaii Pro stay at 80'C at max with lower fan speed.

if it a defected 290, it would perform bad and often BSOD.
this is perform great with 13.2 WHQL but at certain point it will BSOD with the code i mention above.

Cooling for my CPU is Cooler Master Hyper 212X will change AIO Water Cooler soon though.

i don't know how to handle BSOD on that certain point, any idea? i feel like bald now, frustating.

Are you BSOD at random or when playing games? if your GPU is idle, and your comp BSOD, then its most lily not your GPU. If you have a friend that can let you borrow a card, see if your comp still BSOD with a different card, if not then its something other then your 290. You could also run on integrated graphics for a while, and see if you still BSOD (try playing LOL on integrated graphics) if you don't have a friend with a card.

nope, never BSOD when gaming. in fact with 13.2 WHQL is getting smooth performance. just now finishing Assassin's Creed IV no issue and Core doesn't downclock with max temp 70'C @100% fan speed.
just once...it BSOD after i open MSI Afterburner but now been 3 days, doesn't appear BSOD anywhere.
unless if i do browsing+listening music or open youtube that will get instant BSOD, strange.

i only have this BSOD code 0xa0000001 (0x0000000000000005, 0x0000000000000000, 0x0000000000000000, 0x0000000000000000) when i install my 290 in my system. my previous 7970Ghz got no problem.
no friend here that can lent me a card and i don't have integrated graphic, i'm using FX-8350 O_O
and be remember, that BSOD only occur when i browsing+music or open youtube.

more confused now....
