Upgrade from i5 to i7

I recently 'upgraded' my computer Jan of last year (2013) with a new CPU and Mobo: i5 3570K and ASUS P8Z77-M. I recently started getting into Twitch Streaming and I'm a little disappointed with the performance I'm getting while gaming/streaming.

I've read that I can get better gaming performance whilst streaming with OBS by upgrading my processor to something beefier like an i7 4770K. My question is: Should I upgrade to the i7 or just wait another year or two to upgrade my entire system?

I usually like to do a full gaming build every 3-4 years.

Another thing to consider is that I'm a bit of a perfectionist. I'd like to be able to play my games, I play all kinds, at 60+ fps at relatively high graphics settings. I currently have a HD 7950 which has been pretty good to me so far--I only purchased that card a little over a year ago. I plan up upgrading to an nvidia card next time around, that's out of my budget to upgrade right now, though. The reason I'm thinking about upgrading to an i7 is because I want to be able to play/stream without suffering any performance hits from OBS.

Any suggestions? Should I upgrade the CPU now or just wait a few years before buying anything. I'd rather not spend needlessly.

I'd also say wait a while.

If you want that extra performance now, get a 3770K (so you don't have to change motherboard, only 7% slower than a 4770k) and a nice CPU cooler. You could probably sell on your 3570K quite easily too.

Thanks for the quick responses, guys! This forum is AWESOME!

I've never sold a CPU before, I'm out in Hawaii, would that make a difference? I'm only familiar with the local craigslist listings. Where would be the safest place to sell a CPU online?

You could try any of the popular online services, as long as you can advertise it and get payment securely. And as long as you can afford shipping to wherever it goes. :D

There's a deals section on these forums where you could advertise it: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/forum-8.html

I listed it, not expecting to receive any offers, but today I got an offer for $180, how does that sound? Is that a reasonable price? I haven't even ordered the i7 yet, if I sell it, I'll be out of a computer for however long it takes for Amazon to ship the processor to Hawaii. *gasp*

Oh well, my 7950 is out for RMA anyways..

Just wanted to let you guys know that I've managed to upgrade to the i7 3770K and while I don't see an improvement in Guild Wars 2, I do see an improvement while recording and streaming, like I had hoped for. Thanks for all the responses!

I also noticed a slight increase in performance in Arma 3.

I guess the purchase was worth it after all! :)
