Hi,

Basically I have had my PC for about 18months now. I love it and it performs extremely well but I'm a bit worried about the GPUs as I hear more modern games are needing more and more VRAM etc. Current specs are:

i7 3770k OC'd to 4.3ghz
Noctua NH-D14 Cooler
Asus Sabertooth Z77 Motherboard
16gb Corsair Vengeance 1600ghz
256gb Samsung 830 pro
2tb Seagate storage
Asus DX2 Soundcard
2 x Gainward GTX 680 2gb in SLI
Corsair GS800w Power Supply
Asus PB278Q 27-inch 2560x1440p
NZXT Phantom Full Tower Case

Generally I can max out games at 1440p with no issues between 50-60fps (on more modern games like Assassins Creed Black Flag etc I can max out but turn down AA slightly and they still look glorious), but today running the new Thief (I know its badly optimised), stuttering away like mad, made me think to the future a bit. I'm just after a bit of advice from the Tech guys as to what would be a good plan, sell both my 2gb 680s and buy a single 780 or 780ti 3gb and then SLI in the future? I just don't want to be left with not enough VRAM and in a year or so and by then the 2gb 680s may not be worth much. Any other suggestions on cards would be greatly received, possibly ones with more than 3gb VRAM? I have pre ordered Watchdogs and also Wolfenstein: The New Order, so I would like to run these well if not pretty much max out at 1440p.

Oh, I have gone off AMD completely as I went through 3 7870s in as many months, BUT having said that I am unaware of how good/reliable the new generation cards are or how they shape up agains a 780 or 780 ti

OR am I being over precautions and should I just stick with what I've got for the next year or so?

I look forward to your advice/suggestions

Many thanks

Dude i think you will not have problem for at least 1 year. But The Divison and Shadow of Mordor gonna be a good test i guess. Wait until you play those 2 games and then ask about it again :)

They have I7-3770k and GTX 670-680 for Ultra Settings Recommended. So i guess you may have a problem at 1440p.

Agreed. You shouldn't have much of a problem for a while. You should at least wait until Nvidia's 8000 series is released.

Thanks for the quick response guys, yeah I think I shall wait till at least the 8000 series comes out that way the 780s etc will be cheaper.

Even with 2 2gb 680s in SLI do you think I will struggle with Watchdogs/Wolfenstein at 1440p?

Thanks again

I Think The Division and Shadow of Mordor is heaviest incoming games. So test your rig on them.

Ah, sorry, you did mention these games in your last post. I shall hang fire just now and see how things go. Thief threw me a bit today and got me thinking about upgrading, it plays very badly indeed. I shall await these new games and test them out before I do anything drastic.

Thanks again for the advice!

The recommend GPU for Watch Dogs is only an r7 260x at 1080p. You should be okay, but I wouldn't expect to play on Ultra at 1440p-- the requirement is an r9 290.

Keep in mind, however, that I don't have any experience using 1440p, so I may be wrong. At any rate, Watch Dogs should be smooth sailing somewhere between High and Ultra.

Thanks Ad Hoc, I take it my 2 x 2gb 680 SLI will out perform an r9 290?

Yes, the only issue is that, even in SLI, you're only getting 2GB of memory.

Right, I've been a bit hasty and ordered 2 x EVGA 780ti 3gb Super-clocked ACX GPU's and a Seasonic SS-1050XM X-Series 1050W fingers crossed I will not have to upgrade for a while and keep me happy at 1440p!!!

Now to sell 2 x Gainward GTX680 2gb GPU's and a Corsair GS800 PSU.........

Thank you all again for your advice, much appreciated
