Is stress testing really necessary when overclocking?

When I OC my CPU, and it runs stable on the most intensive application/game I have, isn't that good enough to test whether it's stable? Stress tests aren't exactly realistic as to what I'll be doing, so why should I put my CPU through 12h on Prime95?

you can get fraps drop in the middle of the gamming and then, unable continue to play the game.you have to run test anyway.im just saying.:)

I haven't and I wont. I've been using my OC for over a month now, constant gaming and no crashes... so there is no need to do it... real life applications is the best way to identify a stable OC

hmmm i know people from both sides of this argument some think they got to melt the thing into the ground others that if its working with minimal problems then leave it alone im kinda in the middle i do stress test but not for long prime 95 for a couple hours if its fine then joy if not then a voltage bump but if you decide not to test just remember that if the screen starts jumping or you cant get in to windows or it bsod just bump your voltage a little till it works

We have the same CPU and the sameOC.. what voltage are you running at?

It is for stability, if your computer is stable in Prime95, then it will be stable in what ever you do.

Whether it is gaming or rendering video, this is usually this is the last time you want it to crash. If you are happy with your OC then fine.

A 12 hour burn-in for would be peace of mind for me.

very nice i like to add a little juice to mine i want it to ride the 60c line so ican get it stable with less but have seen other chips in the past have voltage problems so like to keep it juiced up

i run prime 95 for like 15 minutes and if no core fails then it is game stable to me...no need to run this torture testing for hours...unstable oc fails prime within 5 minutes..
