Motherboard upgrade question

So, I was browsing around here, and somebody told me that the motherboard I have now (the 970A-G46) is notoriously bad for 8 core processors. I have been running my 8 core in here (no overclock, I wouldn't dare do that) for just over 5 months. I was thinking about upgrading to the GIGABYTE 970A-UD3P, because of its great price and good power design. Is this really necessary? Thanks for any help. (plus replacing a motherboard takes a long time and is generally pretty annoying)

Solution

Yeah, I saw a warning from DeusAres saying he got a email from MSI regarding that motherboard and AMD FX 8-core models. None of the 970 chipset boards seem to have great reviews the Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3P seems to get more positive then most.

I'm not so much worried about performance, more whether or not my CPU will last. Someone on this forum was telling me that the VRMs on the board are horrible, and my CPU could be fried any moment. I don't know how substantiated those claims are.

Is it necessary to change it though? I want my parts to not be destroyed, man!

I'd contact DeusAres and ask him to send you a copy of the email he has an make the decision for yourself. You seem to have quite a bit of motherboard knowledge you have the expert badge. I'm sure once you review the email you'll come to a good decision. Personally I've not heard of any issue other then what DeusAres has posted. You could also ask if anyone using that motherboard has had any issues with FX 8-core CPUs.

Thanks for your help. Just wondering, how much better would my performance/reliability be with a 990FX chipset board? Thanks. You also seem to have an extensive knowledge of motherboards yourself!

The 990FX is definitely on the top of the food chain for the AM3+ motherboards. They are considered very feature rich for a AMD motherboards. The two most popular models are probably the ASUS SABERTOOTH and the GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD3.

Performance won't be any different and reliability comes down to the mobo. These is basic mobo knowledge. Badges really mean nothing. We get plenty of kids on here who don't really know anything and get badges because they just post stuff and get best answer.

What I am worried about is the reliability. That is why an upgrade seems attractive at the moment. However, the motherboard has been serving me fine for a long time now.

If you've been using the motherboard without issue for awhile now why the sudden concern? If there aren't any new issues that have caused you to worry then I'd just be happy and keep what you got going. If it ain't broke don't fix it, lol. If the board is failing you some how or you want some additional features then I would upgrade.

I guess you're right. The sudden concern was this thread I commented on:

I always try to give people the benefit of the doubt, if he has enough knowledge to be able to help people I think that means something. I don't know how knowledgeable he is or even how old he is for that mater of course I figuring he is over 13. He is asking questions and for that I feel he is sharper then the average guy.

I see paitjsu put the fear in you about his bad luck with the board. Well how you have configured the motherboard seems to be working fine for you, so I'd be temped to say if you keep doing it the same way hopefully you'll be good. However keep in mind nothing last for ever these days. Keep your important files backed up and if anything ever does happen then you can worry about what motherboard to get.

I do keep that in mind. There aren't really any important files, but I would think, based on my knowledge of motherboards, there are precautions that are taken to stop power surges and stuff of that nature to protect your parts.
