Hey, I've got a Dell Inspiron 580 with an Intel Core i5 650 Clarkdale. This Processor runs at 3.2Ghz with a boost of 3.4Ghz.

My question is, since the socket type is LGA 1156; could I put an LGA 1156 Intel Core i7 875K on the board???

If I can, do you think the Dell Bios will still Run Properly and recognize the upgraded Processor?

If it would all work, since this Processor is a K model, meaning it's an unlocked processor, could that open overclocking ability? or would the Dell Bios still not allow that?

Yeah I know it's outdated, and Yeah I've already built another gen 3 top of the line gaming rig, so Please don't just say it's not worth it and call it solved.

Thanks!
-Chris R.

Solution
I looked through BIOS mod forums and nothing there, except modding BIOS to crack OS serial.

The only way is to upgrade processor to Intel Core i5 760 (2.8GHz/8MB cache), you can get this for about $90 on eBay, if your RAM is below 8 GB, increase it, maybe using PLL number and SETFSB, but it is gray area.

SSD as bootable drive will add some speed as well.

This is about it.

Anything else I can help you with.

You can move to an i7 8xx. Shouldn't be a problem. I don't think a BiOS flash is necessary for that.

Unfortunately you have Dell, so you can not upgrade to i7 - Dell OEM BIOS doesn't have support for i7.

Don't take my word for this, look at the source:

i3 and i5 processors are supported, i7 processors are not.

Intel Core i5 650 (3.2GHz/4MB cache)
Intel Core i3 550 (3.2GHz/4MB cache)
Intel Pentium Dual Core G6960 (2.93GHz/3MB cache)
Intel Core i5 760 (2.8GHz/8MB cache)
Intel Core i5 750, 45nm, 95w, processor (8MB Cache, 2.66GHz)

Sorry.

Anything else I can help you with?

Hmmm, somehow that doesn't surprise me, being Dell.

Ahh so the I7 875K needs a different Chipset! Thanks for saving me on that one!
well, are there another "performance boosts" you might suggest?
such as I have already Unparked cores, added ram etc.

That's got me scratching my head. The i7 9xx (Socket 1366 ) was still controlled by the BiOS as far as OCing, in that it was a locked BiOS that prevented you from OCing. I always thought that it moved to the Processor as far as being locked /Unlocked with the 2nd gen Sandy Bridge. I have a Gateway sitting on the floor with an i7 960 that I tried to unlock the BiOS, but could never get it to work. You might wanty to go over to www.bios-mods.com and look around and see what if anything they may have on that computer or Motherboard if you know the Model and number of it.

That would not be a processor upgrade. He is alredy running an i5 850 @ 3.2 Ghz. That would be a downgrade going to a 2.8 Ghx 760.

Check the first sentence of OP, I guess "He is alredy running an i5 850 @ 3.2 Ghz" was a typo :

650 id Dual Core and 760 is quad, what am I missing here? A bit faster frequency vs extra 2 cores, now days more and more applications recommend QUADs. Games start using multiple cores as well, time of very fast Dual Core is over.

Yeah, and I had the wrong stinkin processor number. I would definitely recommend a quad over a Dual core.

You will see increase, but not huge, all depends on the programs you use. General Windows experience would be about the same, unless you add SSD. SSD would make visual difference, with programs open much faster, Quad will move programs in their work a bit faster, if your RAM is below 8 GB, getting to 8 GB will add some agility to your system - basically, do not expect huge visual improvement from this particular CPU upgrade alone!

Now, is it all cost effective? This is a good question. If your budget is very tight and not expected to get better in next couple years, and you need PC mostly for work/office duties with light gaming (not Battlefield 4, Crysis Series or Far Cry 3 and similar, which are power hungry games), then this upgrade is justifiable.

If you need PC for all described above duties and games like BF4, FC3, Crysis and similar CPU demanding titles - you need new or much younger PC, upgrade is not justifiable.

Custom GEN 3 is just a title or XPS GEN3? What processor you have there?

If 580 is for multitasking only, no upgrade is necessary.

On My gaming PC My Specs, are
Intel Core i5 4670K (Hoping to one day upgrade to an i7 Extreme 6 Core),
The i5 is a Quad core running @ 3.4Ghz, with a turbo of 3.8Ghz Flat. (Haven't yet overclocked, bc all the games run so smoothly).
For my Motherboard I've got a GIGABYTE Z87X-D3H (Has 3 PCI 3.0 @ 16X each; USB 3.0; SATA III)
I've got a Corsair NEUTRON GTX 240GB SSD,
Dual Radeon R7 260x's with Crossfire X Running,
Corsair HX750 PSU,
16GB of Corsair Vengeance RAM,
Corsair H75 Water-cooler with a dual fan setup.
Rosewill Challenger Mid Tower Case
-Custom blue LED's
I Think That's everything (Except just a standard Read/Write DVD Rom)

With this setup, I get around
60FPS In DayZ (Med. Settings)
150~200 FPS in Counter Strike GO (Depending on the server)
75~80 FPS In BF3 (Ultra Settings)
115~130 FPS In BF4 (Auto Settings..It bounces from Ultra to High) 100~115 FPS on Ultra Constant.

What do you think of the specs?

(I have a coupple more "close up's" of the MOBO, and wire management if you want to see them)

Long Story Short, I'm taking My Inspiron 580 Up to collage, and I'll have a laptop, but I also want a desktop to come back to for major applications. I just want to go ahead and upgrade it now, so I can help it stay in good standing with other machines, and not just fade away as a slow dual core.
I have some Pic's of my "Tricked out" (Not really though ;) ) Inspiron 580 if you'd like to see them!

I feel so bad - I have the skills but not the budget for building something similar for me, so no more pictures of glory, LOL.
Feel free to post pics related to the upgrade, so I can help you if needed.

I also have 2 PCs, one for pleasure (much weaker than yours) and one for general duties, using it now.

Good luck with your upgrades, you will be fine, I am sure (looking at your self built one).

Haha, Thanks, I'll be sure to re-post some before, and after up-grade Pics in this Thread when I (eventually) get the processor upgraded!

Here is some cool Pics of my Inspiron 580, they are of my Graphics card upgrade (Radeon HD 6950) PSU Upgrade (Corsair 650W) and later, my Cooler and LED lighting Upgrades.

I actually think you might have helped me before Kisianik, in finding a cooler for my 580 back in the summer of 2013!!

anyway here is what my 580 currently looks like, Enjoy!

Well, I have a few pictures of my original case Inspiron 570, right before I moved to CM HAF 912 case, your looks much less than mine, CPU cooler is mine adapted to Inspiron, GPU was MSI 550 TI OC Cyclone, huge fan no heat at all.
