My friend asked me to fix his computer after it would not boot up. after asking some questions, I came to the conclusion that the hard drive must have crashed and told him that I would try to run diagnostics and repair the drive from my computer. My only problem is that I think it might harm my system because win7 might for some reason be confused with the win8 drive. I've heard that you can't create a folder named "con" or "aux". If this is true, how will my computer react when another drive does have those folders? I just want to know if this is safe. Thanks for any answers.

If you have two drives, one with Windows 7 and the other with windows 8, there shouldn't be a problem as you are going to be booting inot one or the other, not both at the same time. Having said that, Windows 8 was installed on another machine so has that machine's profile, so may not work.

I tried plugging in the hard drive, but it was not recognized by my bios. I then continued booting to my primary drive, but it would get stuck on the splash screen. I unplugged the SATA power cable to my friends driveand booted successfully. Is the drive salvageable it safe to plug the cable back in after I boot into my Windows 7 and try to repair it?
