Hello all, well I am quite new to computer building, and quite new to computer gaming. Which leads me to this question, Does the brand of the card (really) matter? For instance, I want a Geforce 640 2Gb ddr3, does it matter if I get it from either EVGA or ASUS? Because the cards look totally different, why is this? It confuses me. Will one card be of better quality than the other? Do they all do the same thing, except one may be junky and look bad while the other is of better quality and works better?

My hp pro 3500mt is only compatible with certain graphics cards, So I am limited to this or another card. I just really don't want to get this card, and it not work do to a small thing I overlooked. My question in short:

Does the look of the card matter, or are they all the same?

Brand doesn't really matter. As long as the brand is reputable they're all basically the same.

Some differences do exist (some cards come overclocked).
Also, the cooler on cards will vary but not greatly.

Basically ... Find the specs you want and buy the least expensive version.

No it doesnt matter. Nvidia is the chip (GT640) and EVGA/ASUS/Gigabyte/MSI etc. buy the chip and build a card with passive cooler or extra cooler and the look. Some of them are the same. Like Asus/MSI/Gigabyte and EVGA are the top 4. But in this model GT640 you will not see any difference. They are all pretty much the same. You should look for DDR5 GPU. Are better for gaming. Like R9 260x/ATI 7750/GTX 750/GTX 650

As I said, my pc is limited to certain cards unfortunately .... I would prob get a 650 because I could max most things out I heard. But I can't :(

The brand makes a difference with how the video card is cooled for the most part. The cooling solution makes more of a difference with more high-end cards that jam a lot of power in small spaces. Since the architectures are the same (both being gt 640s), the preformance will be the same unless vram differs (more is better) or clock/memory speeds are higher. Different manufactures use different pcb (chip under heatsink) for various reasons including overclocking and longevity (hard to test). Other manufacturers just supply the sticker and change nothing to the reference card of amd/Nvidia (Diamond, I am talking about you). In terms of compatability, is mostly about the Motherboard socket and power supply. Each cards requires x amount of power and pcie 16x is the standard for video cards. If you have both, any video card should work. Additionally, you want all your pc to be evenly Matched in terms of preformance meaning you should NEVER buy a video card that costs 3x more than your processor to avoid bottlenecks (constraining one part due to another lack of preformance). Sorry for the long ramble and I hope this helps!
