Scanner problem, Code 10 error message in Device Manager

My USB-connected Epson scanner won't start. I don't get an error message or anything, but when I click the icon to open the scanner software the scanner icon appears in the task bar, and nothing else happens. Windows Task Manager just reports that the program is unresponsive, and I have to use WTM to close it. Device Manager doesn't report any problems with the scanner, but there are exclamation points next to H:\, I:\ and J:\ under "Portable devices", along with the message "this device cannot start (code 10)". I downloaded a tool called Fixit from Microsoft, and it reinstalled the drivers, but the issue wasn't fixed.

I just find it strange that Device Manager doesn't report any problems with my scanner, in spite of the fact that it won't work, while it reports problems with other devices that don't seem to be related to the scanner. My other USB devices (mouse, keyboard, and two external hard drives) seem to be functioning normally.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I did some additional research and came up with something that worked. I removed all of the objects under "Portable Devices" in Device Manager, and scanned for hardware changes. The objects under portable devices were labeled WPD, and the still had exclamation points next to them, so I went to Disk Management (Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management) and assigned the objects drive letters, since I remembered seeing drive letters there before. Apparently the objects were then able to start, because the exclamation points went away. As for the scanner, I removed it using Device Manager, and uninstalled the driver from Add/Remove programs. I then reinstalled it, after which it also worked.

I felt like I should give some follow-up since I posted the question. I still find it strange that I should have two problems appear at the same time. It's hard to believe they're not related, but I certainly don't understand how they are. I just hope the problem doesn't recur!

Thanks.
