I recently built my first PC. When i went to press the power button for the first time nothing happened! The only thing showing that it worked was a green LED on the mobo that lit up every time I turned the psu on. I am confident that I put everything in the right place.
My specs:
Amd fx-6300
Kingston blu 1600 mhz ddr3 (4gbx2)
Asus M5A97 R2.0 mobo
Gigabyte radeon r9 270
EVGA 80+ 500w psu
Seagate Barracuda 1 tb HDD
Stock heatsink
Nzxt Source 210 windowed
I believe that kingston might have sold me FBram instead of SDram, when i opened the package there was a guide labeled "Kingston FB-Ram" there is nothing that is labeled sd on it sticks themselves.
Another fear that I have is that I just have a crap mobo since it was only $90

Solution
When connecting the leads from the power switch to the pins on the motherboard you want to make sure that you have them on the correct pins or the board will not start up. To test the board you can remove the two connectors and take a screwdriver and place it briefly on the two pins making contact with both at the same time to make the board start up. You can also try switching the two connectors.
