CPU won't power on after shutdown/hibernation

Hi,

Having an odd problem I would appreciate some insight to. Built a new rig back 8 months ago; everything was working fine and dandy, when all of a sudden I can't turn my machine back on after a shutdown or it goes into hibernation. I've tried cleaning for dust (there was a bunch), turning the PSU on/off at the back of the computer; no dice. Checked inside the computer and cables all seem to be in place. The only thing that works is to physically unplug the cord from my outlet and plug it back in - once I do that it fires up like normal (nothing over heating, no strange sounds). But again, if it goes into hibernation/shut down I can press the power button and nothing happens. It doesn't turn on for a few seconds with a few beeps - it's as if the computer isn't plugged in at all.

Once I unplug-replug and use the computer everything works fine with no hiccups

Any insight would be much appreciated. Build is below:

Win 7

MSI Z87-G65
SAPPHIRE 100351SR Radeon HD 7970
G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB)
Seagate Barracuda 1TB Serial ATA Hard Drive
SeaSonic G Series 550-Watt
Intel Core i5-4670K

I ran itno something like this on my win7 machine about 18 months ago but I can't for the life of me remember exactly how I fixed it. If I remember correctly it was something to do with hibernate and the BIOS and Win7 power settings conflicting. I think I just disabled the hibernate feature. You might try that to see if it gives a different result than what you're getting now and then maybe get further into the power settings to see if you can resolve it if you really need the hibernate function. I didn't miss it because if my machine is on I'm working on it.

BTW check you power button connection to the mobo also. If you can turn the machine off by pressing and holding it, then the power button is fine.

Thanks for the feedback.

I'll try removing hibernate, but it still seems odd that shutdown would still cause this problem if it was only hibernate that was the issue. The power button does work, as I use it to turn the computer back on after unplugging/replugging.

Once oddity I did notice - when it hibernates and I unplug/replug, I turn it back on and it picks up where I left off (not a fresh start).

Yeah, that rings a bell. What it's actually doing when it does come back on is waking from hibernate. If I remember right, that was my problem and it was an issue with the BIOS. I don't remember if it was a BIOS setting or a BIOS update that it needed. I didn't have time to mess with it at the time because I had work to do so the problem just fell by the wayside after I disabkled the hibernate and I never got back to it.

My mobo is an ASUS so you might night check with MSI to see what they have to say and make sure you've got the msot recent BIOS update..
