OS Upgrade Help Needed!

Hey guys I currently have Windows 7 installed but it was a non-genuine version so I'm looking to sort it and upgrade at the same time, Do I need to be buying Windows 8 then upgrading to 8.1 or buying Windows 8.1 directly, Thanks in advance.

It will not let you upgrade. You need a genuine version of Windows 7 to upgrade to 8/8.1.

Buy a valid full install of windows 8, blow away whatever you have during the install. Then upgrade to 8.1
or
Buy 8.1. Install, blowing away whatever you have.

Okay now I'm confused, one says it wont let me upgrade, the other says I can... Anyone else able to assist in this matter?

You can't 'upgrade'. You can, of course, do a full reinstall.

I would say just buy a genuine version of whatever OS you want- eg Windows 7 or 8, because it will rid all the problems you might get trying to upgrade from Windows 7 to 8 using a non-genuine version.
