PC boots up but won't connect to any monitor

So I recently built a computer but since I was fairly new to it, I didn't know it had to have a graphics card (Because it isn't going to need to perform any high demand tasks). When I kept plugging it in and not getting anything, I eventually figured out that I need a graphics card. So I got online and purchased a Sapphire Radeon 5450 HD. The motherboard is an ASrock Z77 Extreme 3. It does come with on-board graphics, but I'm pretty sure they're only compatible with certain CPUs. Please tell me if I'm wrong on that. But, the Radeon was delivered to me, I just put it in a PCIe slot like it said, booted it up to the monitor, and again. There was just a blank screen. The cables are all hooked up very tightly, there isn't anything loose. I would like to know if I am actually able to access the motherboards On-board graphics feature. I would also like to know if I can, how come it wasn't working at first? And if it has nothing to do with the problem, can someone tell what the problem is? I have no idea what's wrong with it. They said to just plug the card into the slot and it should be fine. However, on every forum I've looked at, they say that they REPLACED an old graphics card. Does this graphics card require that there was a previously installed one?
Please Help! I really have no idea what could possibly be wrong with it.

actually you don't need a graphics card per se as i'm assuming you're using an lga1155 chip (cause you're using that z77). take the card out first then plug your display cable onto the board. lga1155 chips got their own graphics processor. also, try to replace your memory modules.

I tried just using the board, and moving the memory modules. Both didn't work

It is a new computer. The PC has booted, but it won't connect to any monitor I try. I'm pretty sure that the pins on the CPU aren't bent, but if there's a way to check, please let me know.
