I currently have a gtx 780 SC edition. But I have an opportunity to swap it for dual r9 290 reference cards which i would watercool. What are your opinions on the r9 290 vs the gtx 780? Which would you go with if you had only a SINGLE water-cooled card. And which would you go with if you had a crossfire or sli set up? This is mainly for gaming

I would go for the 2 GTX 780's (SC) because they run much cooler than the R9 290's and also the 780's look much cooler :)

The 780's also have a higher clockspeed (because of the SC) so expect a better experience with them.

The card would be cooled with a waterblock anyway though .

If the R9 290's were watercooled, then they would be much quieter and get better performance. (Than 2 GTX 780's). So if you can go with those, it will every game on the market today above 80 FPSi (Apart from Crysis 3)

watercooled r9 290 dual is better than sli 780 only if that watercooler is good enough to maintain the temperature of the 290s. if not 780 sli is better. cause the 290 oc more and boost are more sustain in lower temp.
