fx 8320 vs i5 or i7

Greetings.

I'm about to make a decision, and it's a very hard one for me so i need some help.
I'm about to build a PC for the first time and I have a dilemma between the fx 8320 and i5-4440.
I'll be doing some gaming, video editing and programming as well (going to learn java for start).
Other components include a corsair CX 600W PSU (Please say so if that's not enough) and MSI r9 290 4gb, 8Gb ram, 120gb samsung evo basic SSD. By the way, will there be any bottleneck between CPU or GPU? If I get fx 8320, I don't plan to overclock....yet.
Also, do you think it would maybe be better to get i7 4770 and 16GB ram instead? With cheaper graphics card of course, something like r9 270x. If i get I7, will i really notice any difference while doing regular stuff?
About the motherboard, if i go with AMD, i plan on getting ASUS M5A97 R2.0. However, I have no idea which mobo should i choose if i go with intel.

There you can have an amazingly good quality entire base for a system for about the price of only the CPU/mobo and this combo will offer very simlilar performance, in real life scenario and daily hardcore gaming you won't notice the difference between both machines unless you benchmark them using single-threaded games on low resolution like most reviewers do online to highlight the slightly better core performance of intel's CPU and trash the AMD competition...

This motherboard and CPU cooler will allow overclock of this unlocked CPU upward of 4.5ghz easily and this setup will feed any high end GPU on the market with no bottleneck whats-o-ever... this it run's any games and applications on maximum details and settings with no problem at all all you need is to add a good GPU and you're good to go.

Here some trusty benchmarks that really shows just how good the 8 core FX chips are compared to intel high-end offerings:

These results are compilation of tests featuring single-threaded and multi-threaded tasks and the time are compiled for every CPU's on the market...you can't get any more significant results than this. You can see the FX-83xx (8320 and 8350 are the same chips only lower clock speed for the 8320 but those are all unlocked so this is not a problem) do really well even against the all mighty core i7 and if you look the 8350 for example is only a 4ghz CPU imagine the performance of these chips would reach at 4.6 or 4.8ghz as most of them can reach those speeds if you're a good overclocker, but conservatively 4.5ghz is reacheable by pretty much any normal user...

no it would not perform ''much'' better, it would perform somewhat a little better in some cases,but for more money. For video editing and rendering OP is better of with the 8 core AMD since most applications (animation and 3d apps as well) does not take advantage of hyperthreading but they do tend to like having more than 4 logical computing units, for that reason i think this user is much better of with a good AMD 8 core machine...and for gaming on the long run i'm sure it will server him very well too with games going more and more multi-threaded and optimised for 8 core CPU'S. I think he made the right decision in this case.

nope, check your facts, just like games most rendering and editing applications today take next to no benefit from hyperthreading.

No i can't, cause i'm wrong :D,
i thought blender and 3ds max didn't took advantage of hyper-threading but only used more logical cores..
but i searched on that and it seem that some functions within the applications does take advantage like in blender for example doing some fluid or cloth calculations would be accelerated with multi-threading but still not as efficient as 8 logical computing units..but the faster intel core's will indeed provide slighlty better results in most cases, but at a higher price/performance ratio.

 


The Xeon option provided by logainofhades is not much more expensive than your AMD offering, and the Xeon will perform better. I don't think the ratio would be all that different.

It would be dumpfooled today to make a program checking for what you call as "logical cores", instead of checking for the avaible threads (which is far better, and would require little additional coding).

Please don't define it as "logical computing units", as that can confuse people. If we are talking about units, we general are talking about ALUs or FPUs or something similar.

Price/performance never scales perfectly, the more performance you want the even more you would need to pay. It have always been this way, and surely would continue.
