30-minute Excel Recalculation !

My large, complex, Excel 2013 Spreadsheet requires between 30 - 60 mins to recalculate using my 6 year-old Intel Core 2 Duo CPU. What current CPU Brand & Model is the most capable for Intense Excel 2013 number-crunching? Also, I'm on a budget, so please no 'Dual Xeon' recommendations. Thanks for the help !

Modern editions of Excel support multi threaded calculation so I would say you are looking at an i5 (4 cores) or i7 (4 + 4 hyper threaded) if you can afford it. You might want to look into how much RAM is being consumed during the calculation operation too in case some of the speed issues are lack of RAM causing hard disk swap outs via the paging file.

This build has no graphics card, but i set up a 4770 system for hyper threading.

Newer CPU's will help, but Excel is going to be hurt by needing blobs of single threaded performance.

Any idea where the holdup in the algorithm is? Or is it a formatting problem. Once I had an equation that had to update the contents and styling of several thousand cells on about 50 or so pages, and it dragged. After analysis, the Formatting is what ate most of the performance. As only three or four rows really needed special formatting, I changed my algorithm to, rather then painstakingly ensuring each cell had the correct format, simply ignored formatting until the end then fixed the handful of cells that broke after the fact. Got a 100x speedup doing things that way.

Point being if you have an equation taking that long, new HW probably isn't the answer.
