Is the GTX 780 3gb worth it?

Hey THW,

I'm planning to build my new rig in the July timeframe, every other ~1700 build I see, a GTX 780 is almost the standard. I was wondering your opinions on if I should go for it, (it's another 120$ from the GTX 770 4gb)

What I'll be doing is mostly gaming, with some video editing/rendering, and streaming to twitch. I play Crysis 3, LoL, BF4, etc. I want to be able to play/stream all of these on ultra with 50+ fps. (That's why I went with the 4gb) For now it'll be on a single monitor, but somewhere down the road I plan on grabbing two more monitors.

My question is, would it be worth it to dish out the extra cash now for the 780? Or stick with the 770 and SLI later on?

If anywhere in the build you find I could cut costs, or change things around a bit, please feel free to comment. Thanks all!

**CPU** | [Intel Core i7-4770K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor](http://pcpartpicker.com/part/intel-cpu-bx80646i74770k) | $269.99 @ Micro Center

Went with the i7 due to the hyperthreading.

**CPU Cooler** | [Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler](http://pcpartpicker.com/part/cooler-master-cpu-cooler-rr212e20pkr2) | $29.99 @ NCIX US

I'll be overclocking slightly, and have read from you guys this is the best bang for it's cost

**Motherboard** | [Asus Maximus VI Hero ATX LGA1150 Motherboard](http://pcpartpicker.com/part/asus-motherboard-maximusvihero) | $189.99 @ NCIX US

Was between this and the Sabertooth, went with this because I liked it more

**Memory** | [G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1866 Memory](http://pcpartpicker.com/part/gskill-memory-f31866c9d16gxm) | $154.99 @ Newegg

I'm going for a Purple build, but due to the mobo being red/black I was looking for some red memory, can anyone suggest what I should get for my build? Red or Black sticks would be fine.

**Storage** | [Samsung 840 EVO 250GB 2.5" Solid State Disk](http://pcpartpicker.com/part/samsung-internal-hard-drive-mz7te250lw) | $161.99 @ Amazon

Pretty much the standard "Once you go SSD you can never go back" - for programs and OS

**Storage** | [Seagate Barracuda 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive](http://pcpartpicker.com/part/seagate-internal-hard-drive-st2000dm001) | $84.81 @ Amazon

I've never done a Raid config, and wanted to try out RAID0 (aware of the consequences)
ideally I want to do a RAID 10, so my question here is - can you start with a RAID 0 and then change it later on? (After I grab two more drives) If I have read correctly it's a pain in the ass, and it's just easier to do what you're going to do from the start

**Video Card** | [Gigabyte GeForce GTX 770 4GB Video Card](http://pcpartpicker.com/part/gigabyte-video-card-gvn770wf34gd) | $373.98 @ Newegg

Originally it was between this and the 770 2GB, but after reading what is required from BF4 and Crysis 3 on ultra, you sometimes hit over that 2GB VRAM so I decided for the 4gb. I then went on to do the "Well it's only $120 more..." thought process, what are your opinions? Should I just shell out the extra cash and grab the 780? If so what brand? Evga, Asus, Msi, Gigabyte? Help me out Tom's!

**Case** | [Cooler Master Storm Stryker (White) ATX Full Tower Case](http://pcpartpicker.com/part/cooler-master-case-sgc5000wkwn1) | $154.99 @ Newegg

I'm aware that there are plenty of cheaper cases that I could get, but I want it to be easily water cooled - ready, I just love how this case looks and would prefer to keep it.

**Power Supply** | [XFX ProSeries 750W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply](http://pcpartpicker.com/part/xfx-power-supply-p1750bbefx) | $109.99 @ Amazon

750W for possible SLI in the future

**Optical Drive** | [Asus DRW-24B1ST/BLK/B/AS DVD/CD Writer](http://pcpartpicker.com/part/asus-optical-drive-drw24b1stblkbas) | $19.98 @ OutletPC

**Operating System** | [Microsoft Windows 8.1 (OEM) (64-bit)](http://pcpartpicker.com/part/microsoft-os-wn700615) | $89.98 @ OutletPC

**Case Fan** | [Xigmatek CLF-F1255 68.3 CFM 120mm Fan](http://pcpartpicker.com/part/xigmatek-case-fan-clff1255) | $13.98 @ OutletPC

Again going for the Purple build, I may not buy these right off the bat to save me some cash, but it's only 30$ so I figured what the hell.

I'm also grabbing a Tesoro Lobera Supreme keyboard ~140$, and Tesoro Gungnir H5 ~50$.

So all together I'm near the ~2000$ Mark and like I said in the beginning, most 1500$+ builds I see, you guys are always suggesting the 780.

Thanks for all of the help!

The problem here is going to be Crysis 3. Both BF4 and LoL will be absolutely no problem on Ultra, even for the 770. However, the GTX 770 definitely won't run Crysis 3 on Ultra at 50+ fps, in fact you'll likely be in the 30s. Even a 780 won't run it at 50+, but it's definitely closer, and that's without even taking streaming/recording into account. To get anywhere near that kind of performance on Cyrsis 3 you'd need at least a 780 Ti. This is all assuming you're on single monitor @ 1080p. Running surround, or higher resolutions are just out of the question with Ultra @ 50+ fps even with a 780 Ti.
