First off, I don't know if I have posted this in the right section, so please move the thread if it's not.
So, my computer is really badly underperforming. I'm not sure what the cause might be, so I came here and asked you. My computer used to run most games on high-medium and have smooth FPS(including Battlefield 3, surprisingly), but now, after about two years of gaming, I've noticed a drastic drop in performance. Most of the games it used to run smoothly are running really badly right now, with low graphics and a choppy experience. What could be the cause?
My CPU is a Q6600 and my GPU is an Asus GTS 450, both at their stock clocks. I have 4GB DDR2 ram and a 500GB hard drive.

Check your temps while gaming. There could be a wall of dust building up so your parts can't exhaust the heat efficiently. Also it could be driver updates causing your PC to work slower, could be a virus, could be the bit-mining trojan, or updates to the games themselves might not be too great for your setup.

I did check my temperatures, and they are normal, even pretty cool I guess (55-60 degrees Celcius), and I actually cleaned my dust this morning.
I don't know about driver updates, because I recently reinstalled Windows to 64bit.. I already scanned for any viruses/trojans, and I played the same versions of games I used to play.

The bit-mining trojan is undetectable by antivirus software.

- Check for Malware
- Check GPU/CPU/PSU fans for dust and blow it out with compressed air.
- Check your hard disk with HDTune or similar to make sure its working fast.
- Check your ram still is showing as 4GB and not 2GB or 3GB.
- Check your CPU for throtting due to overheating use Realtemp and fire up Prime 95 or cinebench.

and get back to us!

An OS refresh may also be a good idea.

Prime 95, run that for 1 hour and see if it passes, check how long it takes for each pass. If the pass get slower, the temps hit 70oC or prime fails then its cpu throttling. Just its case its power management issue, set as below.
google Disable_CPU_Throttling_in_Windows

One you rule that out, its looking like gpu fault, you will need to borrow a GPU to swap in and test.
