Hi forum,

I want to save video streams to a hard drive with a server, maybe around 6 streams. I'm also thinking of running some groupware and maybe a web server on the same machine, as well as a PBX for 6 IP phones.

So, for storing video streams, I've been recommended Xeon E5-2620, but other people have told me to look at non Xeon processors instead. So that would be i5 or i7?

Which type of processor is better for my needs? I'm only thinking of buying one processor as I can't really afford twin CPUs.

Solution
For the price of that Xeon and necessary hardware, you could probably build two systems with a Xeon 1245 v3. The 1245 v3 equivalent to an i7 4770, but costs less. I would go with this, and get yourself an inexpensive raid card, if you intend to do raid at all.

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks

CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1245 V3 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor ($274.99 @ Amazon)
Motherboard: ASRock B85 Pro4 ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($64.99 @ Amazon)
Total: $339.98
(Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available.)

If you intend to have a dedicated graphics card at all...

Since you are there, you could go with this and use the motherboard's raid if you really wanted too. The H87 board is cheaper than the B85 board for you. Just remember, you are tied to Intel with that Raid if you use the motherboard's raid. I am in that boat right now with my file server.

Motherboard: ASRock H87 Pro4 ATX LGA1150 Motherboard (£54.56 @ Amazon UK)

The 1230v3 and an HD 5450 is slightly cheaper.

Probably the Xeon if you're looking for streaming videos.
