Is/Are there ANY performance benefits/difference between win8/8.1 and a win 7?

And please don't put the "start menu need to (insert request here)"

any charts,graphs or anything that clarifies my question would me much appreciated as I am pondering if I should go to win 8 to juice out more performance for gaming (primary usage)

and if I do go win 8 how about its backward compatibility with old games (think age of empires,call of duty(first one)/XP generation games)?

Yes, there are performance increases from switching to Windows 8/8.1. Though they're usually very minor (like 2-3 fps maybe), there is the occasional game that sees even bigger increases. Battlefield 4 is a notable example, but I can't think of any others.

this will give you a better idea. There is some performance gains. But negligible for most people as they wouldn't be able to tell the difference.
