Hi all,

I know gaming laptops don't generally fall in this price range, but it's all I've got and I'm trying to find the "next best" when it comes to gaming.

1. What is your budget?

500-800 pounds (800-1300 US dollars)

2. What is the size of the notebook that you are considering?

15-17 inch (15 preferred)

3. What screen resolution do you want?

Not that important, but 1920x1080 would be best.

4. Do you need a portable or desktop replacement laptop?

Laptop as I would still carry it around to university

5. How much battery life do you need?

Not important, it would almost always be plugged in if I'm playing. so 2-4 hours for taking it to class/library/train etc

6. Do you want to play games with your laptop? If so then please list the games that you want to with the settings that you want for these games. (Low,Medium or High)?

Definitely, things like Total War: Rome 2, Star Wars: The Old Republic, Starcraft II, etc. I've been playing on lowest settings all this time so medium-high would be a great change.

7. What other tasks do you want to do with your laptop? (Photo/Video editing, Etc.)

Mainly just Microsoft office work

8. How much storage (Hard Drive capacity) do you need?

500 GB or higher

9. If you are considering specific sites to buy from, please post their links.

10. How long do you want to keep your laptop?

2+ years

11. What kind of Optical drive do you need? DVD ROM/Writer,Bluray ROM/Writer,Etc ?

I use my playstation to play DVDs so anything that can read a game disk

12. Please tell us about the brands that you prefer to buy from them and the brands that you don't like and explain the reasons.

Anything reliable with a sense of style (i.e. not a block). Things like Dell, Asus, Lenovo have a decent reputation. However I do welcome less known/custom brands if they're good

13. What country do you live in?

United Kingdom

14. Please tell us any additional information if needed.

Around an i5 or better processor and geforce 700 series card if possible. 640M would do fine too for the games I mentioned I believe

Solution
Plenty of options!
1. pcspecialist.co.uk - 15.6" cosmos II, 1080p, I7 4700MQ, gtx 850M, 8GB ram, and all the other trimmings can be done for just under £800. (trimmings being better wireless card and maybe an SSD? )
2. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Gaming-Laptop-MEDION-X6823-i7-3630qm-8GB-750GB-GTX670MX-New-Sealed-in-box-/111324332037?pt=UK_Computing_Laptops_EH&hash=item19eb728005 - it's still in the box, and its a decent laptop, may be similar to the one above but its a bit heavier.
3. if you like the asus rog style - plus this has FANTASTIC build quality and cooling - but very heavy...

Thanks for the replies guys! Very helpful, much appreciated.

My friend had a slightly larger budget than me, and went for the alienware 14 a few months ago. Is it worth the extra 200 pounds? Is alienware really that good? It has a good reputation for gaming PCs but I'm unsure if the well-known name is worth the extra 100-200 pounds above the budget.

No, it's not. It's the brand that costs, very much like Apple.

the only alienware he could get for that price is one with the gt 750M - and quite frankly that's hilariously bad compared to the ones I showed ^_^
