I use a USB to Serial Adapter for a COM port, in order to configure Cisco devices. From time to time, the COM port will disappear from the Device manager and even if unplugged and plugged back in it does not work. I have to reset the PC. Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this or how to fix it? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am using Windows 7 SP1 64-bit.

This should be a driver issue. I also use a usb to serial adapter to do the same and had similar issues in the past.

Have you installed a driver specific to your adapter or did you just plug it in and allow windows to find the device and install automatically?
If this is the case then you need to use the driver that the cable came with to resolve the issue.
I personally use a "Prolific USB to Serial Adapter" driver that came with the cable and stopped having problems.

Another thing I found is that the cable works on only 1 of the 2 usb ports on my HP Elitebook.
For some reason it wont work on the right usb port!!
Oh yeah, and some times I need to have it plugged into AC to work...

SO as you can tell I have had my share of suffering...

If worse comes to worse you could pick up a PCMCIA Serial adapter (which is what I should have done also) to save you the frustration!!
