Ive been intending to get a CS650W power supply from Corsair but I've been reading up about it and although this PSU supplies enough wattage, it isn't recommended for gaming usage. Is this true?
that's a good power supply... you've gotten some bad information.!!!
it's not the best in the world, but it's more than adequate to power a decent rig with no worries!
It will work, but not be stable for a long time. Corsair CS, CX, and RM units use lower quality capacitors than other Corsair units (hence CS, CX, and RMs are so cheap) and XFX / SeaSonic. Lesser caps = shorter lives with less stable power delivery. While they do fine in HTPC and office PCs, in gaming you will need a PSU that will constantly give out the correct wattage, with no danger of damage to your components.
I agree with Jacob. Corsair has lately been "coasting" on an excellent reputation, created when their PSUs were built by Seasonic. Now, their lower models use CWT, and long-term quality has suffered. Stick with Seasonic, or anything they build, or get a Superflower-built Rosewill Capstone; those are also excellent PSUs.
what are your specs? are you sure 650w psu is needed? its an ok product but overpriced. you can easily find better for about the same money which will last longer due to better quality. http://pcpartpicker.com/part/xfx-power-supply-p1650bbefx top product and way better than cs.
I wnat the best for my money but is there anything that is around the £60-70 mark. That XFX was $100 which is equivalent to £60 but is actually around the £80 mark on the recommended sites?
