I was thinking of waiting for the ddr4 compatible cpu's to come out. In the mean time I was also thinking of buying some ddr3 ram if it is on sale. But would it be compatible?

The slots for the two standards are different, so in order to support both, the MB manufacturers would have to have both type slots available, thereby limiting the amount of ram each could support. also, you could only use one of the standards at a time, not both.

Yea, that is what DDR2 and DDR3 equipped boards did. But there were DDR2 only boards that AM3 chips worked in just as well as DDR3 only boards. It would require the CPU to support current boards and chipsets, plus the new boards coming out with new chipsets and DDR4 support.
