looking to get a high quality gaming headset and have my eye on the Sennheiser G4ME ZERO or Mad Catz F.R.E.Q.7 Dolby 7.1 or Corsair Vengeance 1500V2 USB Dolby 7.1 Gaming Headsets . But I've read that high end headsets like these need a powerful sound card or headphone amp to get the most out of them.

Will the on-board audio of the Asus MAXIMUS VI GENE Intel Z87 Motherboard drive one of theses headset?

Solution
sennheiser. They have great audio quality so they are better than the others for music too. They also have the best mic out of the 3 but its not detachable.

i want the sennheiser only for gameing but just dont want to spend £190 on it then not get the best out of it = waste of money

Ya it'll work, but remember that you can't really compare the 3 headsets. They are all in different price ranges so the sennheiser is gonna be the best, but it's also the most expensive. If that's what you are looking for then that is the one for you. And yes your motherboard can drive it.

Another thing to think about is the Sennheiser G4me One. Its basically the same headphone but with a closed vs open style.

Nope, the onboard sound will be just fine for that. If you were getting audiophile grade headphones then I'd suggest thinking about a sound card but with a gaming headset the onboard sound is just fine and the ROG board has some good gaming oriented features like the sound radar.
