Display won't scale in some games.

Splendid
I recently revived a 7 year old system, that hasn't been powered for ~5 years.

Upgraded to a 280x and a 1920x1080 monitor on HDMI running W7.

Initially, the desktop wouldn't utilise the entire screen on HDMI, only DVI. Disabled overscan in the AMD Catalyst control centre and all was good.

Some games, however, still won't use all the screen. There is a ~2" black border despite running native rez. The display area is 'shrunk' rather than cropped, if that makes sense.

Game that display correctly include:
-Skyrim
-Crysis 3
-Farcry 3

Games that don't:
-Payday 2
-Crysis 1

I've scoured game, CCC and W7 settings, but can't find anything.

Any ideas?
Thanks.

Hi,
Your issue is that you don't have "Scale by Aspect" enabled.

You can do this either in the MONITOR itself, or in the Video Control Panel. I have an NVidia card, but you should be able to find a section in your CCC (Catalyst Control Panel) that scales on the GPU and not on the Display.

You'll also want to scale by ASPECT if you use GPU. What happens here is that it always outputs the maximum resolution of the monitor (i.e. 1920x1080) but scaling is done by the graphics card.

HDMI issues:
HDMI on most monitors is different from DVI and uses the same protocol that HDTV's use. If so, you may have problems scaling properly and setup might be different. For example, you might have to use the HDTV section and set to 1080p@60Hz_NTSC...

There is simply no reason to use HDMI unless you need sound from the monitor, in which case I suggest desktop speakers anyway.

Quick tips:

1. Use DVI
2. Set monitor to "Scale by Aspect" (done on monitor itself)
3. CCC-> enable GPU scaling
4. CCC-> enable "Scale by Aspect"
