I have a Toshiba P300 laptop with a Matshita DVD-RAM UJ880AS, it has worked fine for years and has created various bootable disks like Acronis recovery disks and a slipstreamed XP installation disk. All disks worked when they were created and for years after but now they won't boot the machine. The laptop can see the DVD drive and you can explore the contents of these disks in windows XP, Vista and Win 8 but won't boot from them. The only disk that can boot from this DVD drive is an old KNOPPIX 5.3 live CD, the newer versions won't boot the machine either. I swapped the drive with one from another P300 and I can boot the machine using any of these disks.

So my question is why will it read all of these disks but only boot from the KNOPPIX 5.3 disk and how can I get it to work with the other disks again so I can get both machines working?

Solution
make sure the laser head is able to move over the entire range smoothly. Sometime the head cant make it to the 'right spot' And just needs a little lube on the rails or dust removal.
