Nvidia GeForce gtx 650 in a Dell Inspiron 620 (mt)

I currently own a Dell Inspiron 620 with a gt 420 gpu, this card is garbage when trying to run games that need a gt 8800 or better card (why the heck would a card 3 years older be 5 times better anyways?).
So, my question is: Can I without changing anything except my gpu, run a gtx 650 in this machine?

The reason I want this is because I want to be able to run some games which I barely cant run/run slow and I plan on buying a nVidia Shield and the gtx 650 is the oldest one that can stream games to it.

Money I want to throw down on this: Around $100
I also live in Sweden if that matters in some way.

All specs I could find:
Motherboard: Dell Inc. 0GDG8Y A00
Cpu: Intel Core i5 CPU @ 2.90 GHz
OS: Windows 8 Pro with Media Center
PSU: 300 W (Dell?)
Harddrive: 1.5 TB

Not sure how accurate these specs are but I also found this: http://www.findlaptopdriver.com/dell-inspiron-620-specs/

Solution
I was unavailable during weekend, I am back.

Since you want to save money and want to stay with GTX 650, I have a present for you - Asus GTX 650 1 GB or 2 GB, both card reported to work very well with Dell 300 watt power supply.

Also, those Asus card have very good fan setup, I almost got similar Asus card in the past, based on the same cooler, so go for it and save serious money.
Power supply upgrade for your Inspiron and GTX 650 is complete waste of money.

Anything else I can help you with?

That power supply will likely giveup on almost any aftermarket card and is unlikely to have PCIe power connectors. I would strongly recommend changing the power supply, your other option is to get a 750ti which is the most powerful card you can run that is <65w and draws power only from the motherboard not the PCIe power connectors.

Thanks fo the quick answer!
Can I fit a Ti in the case though? And would it work with my mobo/cpu in a PCI Express 2.0 slot as I dont have any 3.0? Also, when talking to my brother he said that the cpu/mobo might get fried if I would use any gpu better than a 640 (I absolutely dont want this to happen), so I just want to be sure that I can run the card.
If not, could you recommend any good PSU (or psu manufacturer)?

PSU definetely aproblem....
Hence try changing your psu as nvidia gtx requires a 350 watt psu.A budget psu for you will be corsair vs450.It also has a 6-pin connector .So you can connect nvidia gtx 650 ti to it also...Cheers...:)

Still, would I lose too much performance if running it in a PCIe 2.0 port? Or is it just a minimal loss?

Edit: Was this the psu you mentioned? http://www.corsair.com/en-us/vs-seriestm-vs450-450-watt-power-supply

Unless you are using a very high end graphics card you will see no performance difference between PCIe 2.0 and 3.0.

Or you can use certain GTX 750 TI which do not require PSU 6 pin connector like this one

EVGA 02G-P4-3751-KR GeForce GTX 750 Ti 2GB http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814487025

I noticed your location, so I just provided that link for you to see the product.

Regarding PSU, follow those recommendations for CPU quality and you will be fine http://eggxpert.com/eggxpert/computer_hardware/f/135081/t/45344.aspx

If you really want to follow manufacturer recommendations follow this guide as well http://forum-en.msi.com/faq/article/power-requirements-for-graphics-cards

However GTX750 TI uses only 60 watt (PCIE provides up to 75 watt) http://www.hwcompare.com/17299/geforce-gtx-650-ti-vs-geforce-gtx-750-ti/

Huge thanks for helping me out!
So, that card does not totally screw up the performance if I would run it in a PCIe 2.0 slot? And I dont need to upgrade my PSU?
The reason I ask about the performance is because my brother says that I wont be able to barely get anything at all more out of a card better than gtx 640.

2.0 runs a bit slower than 3.0, this is bandwidth related, so no real problem here.
Regarding PSU, you said something about $100 budget, however 650 TI will require PSU upgrade, additional money, you know. 750 TI I found doesn't require PSU upgrade, it is a bit more expensive, but it will work with original PSU, so this way is a bit cheaper and less work.
This is my point of view.
If you want to change PSU anyway, different GPU can be considered.

Do you think a better gpu that I can run with about the same price will come in the time of 6 months? It may take a while until I can buy this anyways

So, I am confused, are you planning to upgrade your current PC so you can enjoy your life at least a little bit, now, or you are planning to suffer until 2015?

Not much difference ; PCIe 3.0 a bit faster....Moreover PCIe 3.0 is backward compatible with PCIe 2.0 ...So no worries there.
And yup..Thats the psu right there......................................

Hey Nicoper,
I don't see any need for you to upgrade your pc.Infact you have an i5 proc....which does the job.
Pair it up with evn Nvidia gtx 650 and still you can mange all games at med-high setting....Think about it.
Why waste precious money ?????

I will probably get a cheaper card for this pc and move it to the new pc until I can afford an even better card.

Wait... So the GTX 650 actually does work for my current pc? As I never got an answer to that I assumed it wouldnt work :p Im getting really confused here

Exactly......Also If you have 720p hd screen you will face no probs with the gtx 650....You will altlaest be able to play in medium setting bro.>>
Note: If you can extend the budget to get an amd radeon hd 7770.....Superb performer..
Feel free to ask if you are still troubled bro...

So I can run a GTX 650 card without upgrading my psu? If so, could you give me a link to one that works, I have only found ones that recommends a 400 W psu, or simply manufacturer + product number would be awesome.

To be on the safer side when running a dedicated GPU (Here nvidia gtx 650) you should always consider upgrading your psu to a branded one rather than relying on the stock one(The one that came with your cabinet). It is becoz though your psu may be rated 300 watt it may not be able to provide the required power on the +12v rail. This is the most important power rail reqired as it powers the mobo...and hence powers the dedicated gpu in your pcie slot.
So as i told earlier you should consider upgrading your psu to atleast a corsair vs450.
And the manufacturer of the GPU always rate their GPU at a higher power to be on the safer side...
You can try Nvidia gtx 650 with your psu as it requires 64W power;but it would be a risk and one which i would never take....So please consider upgrading your psu and buying the dedicated GPU....
One more thing the EVGA gtx 650 mentioned earlier in other answer is the one you should have a go at....
Cheers bro.

I looked at some PSUs and have a found a few that would probably work great for me, Coolermaster V750 (Semi-Modular), Corsair HX750 (Semi-Modular) and Corsair AX760 (Fully-Modular) (I will move the psu to the new machine). My brother has a HX750 in his pc that he built 2 year ago or something, the only problem with that one is that it seems to be impossible to find a retailer in Sweden that still sells it. I would like some opinions on this.

Thanks alot for all your help, I will think this through for a while and see if I can get a good deal on the card, or perhaps I will deal with the (not actually that big) gpu problems I have until I build the new machine.
