hi all. i reclently succesfully overclocked me prosessor using clockgen from 2.2 to 2.5 mgz.

however today i got my 4X2Gb pc2 6400u 800mgz RAM upgrade in the post. i wacked the sticks in and it runs great. when the permition promt came up at start up i clicked no because i know that when i overclocked the pro i also overclocked the ram i used to have installed so i thought id start fresh with clockgen and maby queeze another 100mgz out of it.

i started the over clock 1 click on each pll bar. very slow clicking aply every time.
when i got to 2.4 i restarted the pc and clicked allow when prompt at start up. all seemed ok until i ran the windows EI. it froze. i had to power off. i tried 2.3 overclock of the pro and the same thing. it must be the new ram that is doing. my specs are...
dell dimentions e521

amd athlon 64 X2 4200+

nvidia oct 103 geforce 6150 chipset

8Gb DDR2 pc2 6400 800mgz

ocz vertex plus 120Gb SSD

standered X1300 GPU

what could i do to solve this. is there anysoftwear that will allow me to overclock the prossesor alone apart from amd overdrive and nvidia ntune. these dont work on my machine

any help would be great. thanks

Solution
I was thinking and thinking, and I think I know what happened.

This is from manual:

Memory
Type 533-MHz, 667-MHz, 800-MHz (when available) DDR2 SDRAM

ftp://ftp.dell.com/Manuals/all-products/esuprt_desktop/esuprt_dimension_desktops/dimension-e521_owner%27s%20manual_en-us.pdf page 107

IT said when available, meaning that 800 MHz is the top Dell motherboard would support, so when you used SETFSB or clockgen, you pushed this number higher and something locked up, I hope not motherboard.
Anither thing, if you look at Crucial memory selector it gives you DDR2 PC2-5300 http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.aspx?model=Dimension%20E521 Amount of RAM is based on info provided by manufacturer, as well as speed, so Dell probably was...
That would be a very difficult situation.

First a few questions about your RAM. What is the exact model you have (CPUZ SPD tab provides this) - not all RAM can be installed in DELL PCs, unfortunately.
Also, with which RAM you had overclock success?

Regarding tools, unfortunately you are using last resort already - PLL number (which one is yours). AMD overdrive is working only with certain chipsets and Black Edition CPUs.

There is also little trick exists, Dell usually placing extra problems in WIn installation, so, reinstallation of your Win OS (which one you have exactly, is it 32 bit or 64, LOL, should be 64 for 8 GB RAM) can be beneficial as well, unless you are already using new installation.

Don't expect miracles here, but it is not over yet.

Hi thanks for your reply

i do have 64bit OS, i clean installed win7 pro 64bit onto my new OCZ SSD 3 weeks ago so no need to reinstall the OS. my pll is locked to nvidia51. do you think the old mobo may have a 800mgz limit with ram. mind you its supposed to have a 4Gb limit but i proved them wrong this morning lol. the other memory was 4 1gb mixed dims.

OOOh, full CPUZ report, what I asked, I still need, thanks for report, but I need one more thing.

Go to SPD tab and get me information, if you have all same RAM sticks, need info for only 1::

Module Size: not this one
Max Bandwidth: not this one
Manufacturer: not this one
Part Number: only this one

So I can find that RAM in retail and compare to my archives - people usually post that number in forums.

the other memory was 4 1gb mixed dims

Do you know which ones?

mind you its supposed to have a 4Gb limit but i proved them wrong this morning lol

That is old news for me, LOL.

How about placing 6400+ processor in your PC, is it a good news? IT costs about $60 on eBay!

sorry my bad.

in decending order as requested (all 4 sticks are the same by the way)
2048MBytes
MBand pc2 6400 400mgz
kingston
king

the other sticks are
2X1Gb 1rx8 pc2 6400u 666 12
2X1Gb 2rx8 pc2 5300u 555 12

i though the 4 gb limit was old news lol

hope this help you more

I would advise you to remove new RAM and place "2X1Gb 2rx8 pc2 5300u 555 12" and see what happened, if you able to overclock again, you messed up just RAM, if problem still there, I guess it is a motherboard.

If you not overclocking, is it still completely functional?

Anything else I can help you with?

I doubt, I can find something else, so far this is the most plausible theory.

thanks alot for your help. i think you may be right about it being the mobo reaching the limit. ive looked on ebay and as im in the uk i can pick up a 6000+ for £20 and paste for £1.99. i think this is the way forward.

everything is still functioal however when i have a few apps open like pkr fire fox and im doing a scan or somthing and i drag a window around it lags a lot and the frames drag. you no what i mean? this never happened. the 4Gb always ran perfectly. please advise

Interesting. I don't know clockgen. So, is there any way to reset settings? Say, if you uninstall completely clockgen, would everything be erased? Because, what you are doing is software overclcok, not hardware, correct? So if software is not there, settings suppose to be erased?!

Last ditch effort would be reinstalling your Win OS doing clean install, if those steps would not fix the problem - you most likely damaged motherboard somehow, which I don't think will manifest in such way.

For thermal paste go for at least Arctic Silver 5 and cleaning solution http://www.amazon.co.uk/Arctic-Silver-Paste-Articlean-Cleaner/dp/B003VRBPAI/ref=sr_1_19?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1397849282&sr=1-19&keywords=arctic+silver+5 for best results

Follow this instruction about Arctic Silver application methods http://www.arcticsilver.com/instructions.htm

yes you have to accept a permition promt at started for clockgen settings to apply so there is no overclock in place. the glitching happens at stock settings. im deffinatly going to but that prosessor at that price. is it true i can use kitchen cleaner to clean the heatsink before reseting it on the pro?

arctic 5 is the paste on ebay for 1.99.

what could be causing the frame draging?

thanks for all your help

do you think i should swich to raid before i reinstall the OS. ive hered that will give me better performance as aposed to IDE.

how should i go about doing this, i know i will have to disconect my storage drive first but after i reconnect it will it boot ok. is there any advice you can give me on doing this

many thanks
