Power socket killed two motherboards?

Hi,

Hopefully the right forum for this, let me know if not!

I've recently moved house, and took a couple of desktops with me, my current one and a newer one I was planning on formatting and re-setting up. Both worked at my old flat. I plugged the newer one in via a surge-protected 4-way adaptor, and tried to boot it. Everything appeared to start up (CPU fans, drives etc), but there was no beep and no video output. I disconnected everything except the motherboard and CPU and the case power switch, still no beep. I replaced the power supply with a spare one I had, still no joy.

At this point I tried plugging in my current one, and exactly the same result. I ran through the same tests and same, no beep even with just m/b and CPU powered. I'm generally ok with assembling PCs although I haven't done one for a few years (not such a gamer these days!), but I thought maybe I was missing something so took the older one to a local repair shop. They've checked everything and said the motherboard is dead. I haven't taken them the newer one but it sounds like the same thing.

I'm not really concerned about the PCs as they're old and I'm happy to buy some newer kit, but I'm very concerned that just connecting to the power supply in my flat appears to have killed two different motherboards instantly even through a surge protector?! Is something like this possible? I'm at a loss to explain what has happened otherwise. There was no visible surge or shorting evident. Obviously I don't want to buy a new one and have it die straight away as well! Is there anything I can test to see if there's an issue with the supply or socket?

Thanks!

Both PSUs were decent, which is why I don't understand how this happened. Static is a possibility I guess, but I was hoping to eliminate the socket as a possible source before I bought any new kit :(

To be honest I'd rather just get a new one, even the newer machine was 3 years old. I was concerned though that something might happen again with a new one, but if people think it's unlikely then maybe I'll just risk it.
